This sense of renewal and growth also exists within our elementary school community. April brings with it a myriad of opportunities for us to continue nurturing the minds and spirits of our students while also celebrating the achievements and dedication of our staff. We have the BEST educators!

As a reminder, there is no school April 15-19, 2024. School will resume on Monday, April 22, 2024. We hope you enjoy the weekend and vacation week with those closest to you!
Best,
Amy McDonald, Principal
April Celebrations!
I wanted to share with you what is upcoming this month as far as celebrations and cultural traditions. For your information, April is Arab American Heritage Month, Autism Acceptance Month, and Month of the Military Child.
Eid al-Fitr, or Eid for short, is a significant Islamic holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. It's a time for Muslims to gather with family and friends to celebrate. The holiday begins with a special prayer, followed by exchanging greetings and giving to those in need. Food and gifts play a central role in the festivities. Eid al-Fitr is a time for gratitude, forgiveness, and spreading joy within the community. Eid is expected to fall at sundown on April 10th.
Vaisakhi, also known as Baisakhi, is a festival celebrated primarily by the Sikh community, marking the Sikh New Year and commemorating the formation of the Khalsa Panth by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. It's observed with prayers, processions, martial arts demonstrations, and community meals at gurdwaras (Sikh temples). Vaisakhi is a time of joy, unity, and renewal of faith, as well as a celebration of cultural heritage for Sikhs worldwide. Vaisakhi is seen as a spring harvest celebration primarily in Punjab and Northern India and is celebrated on Saturday, April 13th this year.
Patriots' Day is a holiday primarily observed in the United States, specifically in Massachusetts, Maine, and Wisconsin. It commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord, which were the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. Patriots' Day is typically celebrated on the third Monday in April, (this year April 15th) coinciding with the anniversary of these battles. April 15th is also the Boston Marathon.
Passover, also known as Pesach in Hebrew, is a springtime celebration that holds deep cultural significance for Jewish families. It commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. At its heart is the Seder, a special meal where family and friends gather to retell the story of Exodus through engaging rituals and symbolic foods.
Beyond its religious roots, Passover is a time for family bonding, delicious meals, and creating lasting memories. It's a reminder of the importance of freedom, resilience, and the enduring legacy of overcoming adversity—a message that resonates with people of all backgrounds. This year, Passover begins before sundown on Monday, April 22, 2024, and ends after nightfall on April 30, 2024.
Earth Day is an annual global event on April 22nd, promoting environmental awareness and action. It began in 1970 and now involves millions worldwide. Activities include tree planting, clean-up campaigns, and advocacy for environmental protection. Earth Day reminds us to care for our planet and work towards a sustainable future.
McGovern Beautification Day!
Volunteers Needed!
The School Site Council has been working to organize a beautification day for the front walkway and the patio by the door leading to parent pick up. The event will take place on Friday, May 10th from 3:30-5:30 pm. We will be planting plants and organizing outdoor spaces to make them even more inviting. We are looking for volunteers to help. Please wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty. If you plan to bring a child, please know there is no supervision available and you will be responsible for your own child. We are limiting volunteers to 30 people. You can find the sign-up genius here.
Solar Eclipse
You may not know, but there is a solar eclipse this year on Monday, April 8th! A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, blocking sunlight and casting a shadow on Earth's surface. April 8th is a total solar eclipse for many in North America and expected to time out between 2:00-4:30 PM in Medway. We should see about 90-95% coverage, During a total solar eclipse, the Sun is completely obscured by the Moon, creating a brief period of darkness known as totality in the path of the eclipse. Solar eclipses are rare and there will not be another one in North America until 2044!
As the eclipse is expected to occur during dismissal time, we want to ensure everyone's safety. Thanks to their quick action and generous support, MEPTO purchased certified eclipse glasses for all elementary students. Students will put glasses on just before they exit the building.
We kindly ask that you reinforce the following safety precautions at home with your child:
- Do not look directly at the sun without wearing your eclipse glasses, as this can cause eye damage.
- Handle the glasses carefully and avoid bending or breaking them.
- These glasses are quite dark, so we will be distributing them at dismissal.
Finally, below are resources regarding the eclipse and eye safety:

Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all our students during this exciting celestial event!
THANK YOU MEPTO FOR SPONSORING OUR ECLIPSE GLASSES!!

COVID-19 Updated Recommendation from MA DPH
As you may be aware, the CDC has dropped the five-day isolation requirement for a positive COVID-19 test. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health also recently updated its recommendations to align with the CDC. The key changes families should be aware of are:
If a student has COVID-19 or other respiratory symptoms, they should remain home until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours (without fever-reducing medication), and symptoms begin to improve or completely resolve.
If a student tests positive for COVID-19 but does not have symptoms, they should wear a mask when indoors, including at school, for five days after testing positive.
Swing & Sing Night
Join us for Swing & Sing, an evening showcasing jazz bands and a cappella groups, happening on Wednesday, April 10th, at 7 PM in the Medway High School Auditorium. This unique evening will feature Medway and Medfield High School a cappella groups as well the Medway Middle School Jazz Band and the Medway High School Jazz Band. Swing & Sing is a celebration of community and the joy of music that you won't want to miss!
Strategic Planning Process
We are launching an exciting nine-month process to develop an updated Strategic Plan for the Medway School District. The updated plan will replace the current plan, 2019-2024 Excellence for All: A Medway Mindset, Strategic Plan, while also embedding elements of the recently developed MPS Equity Plan. An important approach to the development of this plan is that it will include engagement and feedback from faculty and staff, students, family, and community members.
We invite you to be a part of shaping our future by joining us in various capacities:
1. Steering Committee: Approximately 18 members, including school, district, and community representatives, will guide and inform the strategic planning process. This commitment involves around 10 meetings, with initial dates set for April 11, May 2, May 16, May 30, and June 13 (tentative). Additional meeting details for next year will follow in the Spring.
2. Advisory Team: Community and school leaders will serve as advocates and advisors to the Steering Committee, ensuring broad engagement. Advisory Team members will participate in a 1:1 interview with our Strategic Planning facilitator and join a Spring Focus Group (dates TBD).
3. Community Workshop: Community members are invited to participate in focus groups to share insights on our strengths and opportunities for improvement.
We aim to finalize our next Strategic Plan by December 1, 2024. If you are interested in staying informed, participating in workshops and surveys, or volunteering for the Advisory Team or Steering Committee, please sign up HERE by March 15, 2024. We'll confirm participation shortly after.
Your involvement is crucial as we chart the course for Medway's educational future. Together, let's shape a strategic plan that reflects our collective aspirations and values.
Know Your Neuro: Adventures of a Growing Brain
The 'SUP Medway Coalition is sponsoring Know Your Neuro brain-focused educational sessions for 4th grade students, drawing from Dr. Crystal Collier's book, "The NeuroWhereAbouts Guide," and her children's series, "Know Your Neuro: Adventures of a Growing Brain." These tailored presentations aim to educate young students on neurodevelopment, making good choices, and fostering refusal skills grounded in neuroscience. For fourth graders in Medway, the focus lies on promoting healthy activities and decision making skills.
There is a special session designed for parents. This presentation is geared more towards adults in order to gain insights into supporting the "tween" brain and applying brain-centered strategies to enhance executive functions. The session will also address how to manage various high-risk behaviors effectively. The registration and information for parents and guardians event is below.

Important Kindergarten Information for Current Pre K Students at McGovern
Registration - Current Pre K Students
It has come to our attention recently that there has been a slight miscommunication regarding Kindergarten Registration for the 2024-2025 school year. If you have a child who currently attends preschool at McGovern and will be transitioning into Kindergarten next year, you will need to fill out a 2024-2025 kindergarten registration. Use the credentials you made for Infinite Campus when you registered your child for preschool. You will then be able to upload up-to-date documents and update new information that may have changed since last year.
Please click here to view the Medway Public Schools Online Registration Directions. If you already have a child in the school district you will skip to Step 2 and follow those directions.
We apologize for the misunderstanding and thank you for your cooperation!
Introduction to Kindergarten Program (Formerly called "Kindergarten Camp")
If you have a rising kindergarten student, check out our Introduction to Kindergarten Program. You can use the online registration form and register your child for a week of fun-filled activities. This is a great way to help your child transition into kindergarten. Students must be registered for kindergarten in order to attend the Introduction to Kindergarten Program.
Parking & Classroom Event's
Parking - Parent Pick-Up
We have recently noticed several cars parking in the bus loop parking lot, outside the main entrance, at dismissal time. Please remember, if you are picking your child up for parent pick-up that you pull into the line. In the event you are parking and walking to meet your child, please park off of school property or at the turn-around area by the field when you first pull into the school's entrance. We have staff and parents entering the school at the end of the day for extracurriculars, meetings, etc. who have no access to parking because of this issue. The front parking lot is also our bus access loop. To ensure safety of all, if must park in the front lot, please be extremely vigilant when crossing the parking lot to enter the building.
Scheduled Classroom Events
If you are at McGovern for a scheduled classroom event, to ensure a safe and efficient dismissal process, please be sure to exit the building promptly and no later than 2:45 pm. Please remain cautious when leaving as our front entrance leads to an active bus loop.
A Note From the Nurse
Clothes Cupboard
Dear Parents,
As your children grow and you find yourself cleaning out their closets, please keep the Clothes Cupboard in mind. Here in the nurses' office, I keep spare clothes for students in case of any accidents. Gently used pants and leggings are needed but all types of clothing are greatly appreciated!
Please also remember to return clothing your child has borrowed.
Best,
Penny McKay

MFE Seeks Volunteers
The Medway Foundation for Education has been providing grants to fund innovative programs, events and educational support to teachers and students in Medway since 2002!
Did you know the MFE funded or helped fund the kiln that is used to make the ceramic tiles that students design, the beautiful new Me on the Map mural at Burke-Memorial and the amazing new performance piano at the high school? And that MFE also funded the Lost Boys of Sudan event, Remembering Auschwitz Virtual Tour, and the inaugural year of the Financial Literacy Fair and STEM Saturday for Girls? MFE is a quiet but powerful resource for our schools, students and teachers. BUT, MFE needs help.
Most of the Board members have been involved for many years and our kids have graduated or are in high school. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS to help us hold events (Dodgeball, Trivia Bee and more) and raise funds so that we can keep funding future grants. You can either join our Board (which meets quarterly to plan events and review and vote on grant proposals) or just help with fundraising and events. Are you a social media guru? We could use that assistance as well. Anyone in the community is welcome but we’re especially seeking input and assistance from parents of those in K-8. Feel free to reach out to anyone on the Board for more information! https://www.mfeducation.org/

FY25 Budget & Strategic Planning Process
Fiscal Year 2025 Budget
During the February 29 School Committee meeting, Dr. Pires, Superintendent, and Mrs. Pat Leonhardt, Director of Business, Finance, and Operations, presented the FY25 Superintendent’s Recommended Budget. The presentation that was shared can be found on the district website.
To keep you informed and engaged in this important process, we are committed to sharing upcoming events and resources designed to foster a transparent and inclusive dialogue with our community. Below is a list of resources and events that have taken place and that will be taking place to provide you with opportunities to remain connected and participate in the discussions surrounding our budget development:
March 14, 2024: Public Hearing on FY25 Budget: On Thursday, March 14, at 6:00 p.m. in the Medway Middle School Presentation Room, community members are invited to share public comments regarding the proposed FY25 budget with the School Committee. This is the final opportunity for community feedback prior to the School Committee vote on the FY25 budget. Feedback shared at the hearing will be acknowledged and noted, but there will not be a dialogue during the Budget Hearing.
March 21, 2024: School Committee to Vote on FY25 Budget: At the March 21 School Committee meeting, the committee will vote to approve and forward the FY25 Medway Public Schools Budget to the Town of Medway to be included as part of the FY25 Town of Medway budget.
May 13, 2024: Annual Town Meeting: Community members are encouraged to attend Medway’s Town Meeting on Monday, May 13, 2024, at 7:00 p.m., at Medway High School, 88 Summer Street, when residents will be asked to vote on the Town of Medway FY25 budget, which will be inclusive of the FY25 Medway Public School’s budget to be used for the 2024-2025 school year.
COVID-19 Guidance
As you may be aware the CDC has dropped the five-day isolation requirement for a positive COVID-19 test. At this time the following Massachusetts guidance is still in effect. If and when the guidance in Massachusetts changes we will update and communicate our new practices.
Approved Transportation Changes
As we have communicated, the Medway School Committee approved the implementation of a Pay to Ride transportation program, as well as some other important changes to the transportation program effective for the 2024-25 school year. While we had planned to share the transportation handbook and information on the registration process by the beginning of March, more time is required. Please anticipate all materials to be shared by the middle of March. Thank you for your patience.
A synopsis of the program approved by the School Committee:
Students in K through Grade 6 who live more than 2 miles from school will receive school transportation at no cost
Students in K through Grade 6 who live less than 2 miles from school, and all students in grades 7-12 who do not qualify for free transportation, can participate in transportation via the district’s Pay to Ride program. The program is structured as follows:
$250 annual fee for first child in a family; $150 annual fee for each additional child with an annual family cap of $550
Students may take a different bus in the morning than the afternoon but each bus (morning and afternoon) must be consistent all 5 days of the week.
- Example of approved scenario:
- Morning pickup on Bus A at home
- Afternoon dropoff on Bus B at daycare
- Example of approved scenario:
- Morning pickup on Bus A at home
- Bus to MEDI on M, T, W
- Either Bus A or Bus B on Th, F (must be the same on both days)
Please use this Google form for any questions or concerns
*Note: Transportation to and from MEDI is managed by MEDI and not considered a separate stop
In addition, families who meet the federal guidelines for free and reduced lunch will not be required to pay for transportation. Federal guidelines for the 24-25 school year will be available soon.
Please note that per Medway School Committee policy JFBB, School Choice students are not eligible for district transportation.

Planning for Inclement Weather
It is the goal of the district to hold school whenever possible. Parents and students should plan accordingly and leave plenty of time on winter mornings to arrive at school safely. Please know that the final decision about a child attending school during a weather event always rests with individual families. There may be occasions when deteriorating weather will mean that schools close due to unsafe conditions.
The superintendent will review anticipated road and sidewalk conditions, access to schools, projected weather forecasts, and consult with the police and public works departments in order to make a determination between approximately 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. if conditions will be safe for students to come to school.
The following plans will be in effect for inclement weather:
No School Announcement
If the superintendent has determined the conditions are unsafe, school will be canceled. The district will utilize the emergency notification system that will contact your home/cell phone and email using the information you have provided to your child’s school. The “no-school” announcement will also be shared on social media channels and carried on local television channels 4, 5, and 7.
All classes, school activities, before and after school programs, the Medway Extended Day program (MEDI), daycare program, adult education evening classes, and any school facilities use activities will be canceled. Transportation of students to out-of-district schools will also be canceled.
One or Two-Hour Delayed Opening Announcement
If the superintendent has been notified that the public works department needs additional time to plow or sand the streets to ensure safety, then a determination for a one or two-hour delay may be made. As with no-school announcements, the delayed opening announcement will be made using the emergency notification system to home/cell phone and email and carried on local television channels.
Please keep in mind:
Bus routes will begin by a one or two-hour delay, including all special education transportation for out-of-district schools.
Do not send your child to school earlier than the delayed opening, as the school grounds may not be plowed and there will be no staff available to supervise early arrivals.
PreK ½ day sessions will take place if a one hour delay is called, and will be canceled for a two hour delay.
School lunch will be served at its regularly scheduled time.
Schools will be dismissed at their regular times.
Emergency Early Release Announcement
If a severe weather condition or other emergency develops during the school day, the district may release students before the typical end of the school day. Parents will be notified by home/cell phone and email and the announcement will be carried on local television channels, and displayed on the district website. As appropriate, the district will work with public safety officials to shelter students in the district if unable to send home.
Inclement Weather Bus Stops for Walkers
We understand that inclement weather days can present challenges when it comes to getting your child to school safely. Snow clearing responsibilities for our town begin with the main roads, followed by sidewalks around our schools. We recognize that this can be especially concerning for families whose children typically walk to and from school.
In the event that sidewalks are not passable and you are unable to find an alternative means of transportation for your child(ren) on these days, we are here to help. To assist us in providing a solution that ensures your child's safe travel to school, please complete the brief form linked here.
By completing this form, you'll enable us to notify you of the designated bus stop location where your child(ren) can board or exit the bus on such occasions. We have introduced this service to support safe transportation to school during inclement weather, and we appreciate your proactive participation.
It is important to note that these specialized bus stops will only be available to families who have signed up in advance. We will communicate additional information once the inclement weather bus stops have been established.
Additional Reminders for Parents
Be sure your child’s school has your updated contact information.
Have a family emergency plan in place so your child knows what to do if sent home for any of the reasons noted above.
If your child is regularly driven to school and you or they feel it is unsafe to drive during the inclement weather, please determine an alternative means of transportation to school.
Breakfast, Lunch and Snack
Snack
Families are asked to provide students with a daily snack to bring to school. If there are any barriers to a family providing a daily snack, please reach out to our main office and they will connect you with an administrator or counselor and we will ensure that all students have snacks daily.
Free Breakfast and Lunch
We are thrilled to offer all students breakfast and lunch free of charge. All students are offered breakfast as they come through the doors at McGovern School and students chose their lunch in the cafeteria. If you do not want your students to eat breakfast or lunch, please have a conversation with your student about your home expectations.
