Announcements
I am so happy to be returning to work this week! I know it will be slow going for me with only one foot in operation, but I am excited to be back with the students!
This week is Book Fair week at LCM! Our class will be visiting the Book Fair on Thursday afternoon during our regular library time. If you would like your child to be able to buy books, please send money to school with him/her on Thursday in a sealed envelope or baggie marked with his/her name. This is a great opportunity for your child to get some reasonably-priced books!
This Friday is Grandparent's Day. LCM Grandparents will be honored at a special Flag Salute on Friday morning (8:45 on the blacktop) and then may visit our classroom for about 15-20 minutes. They may then take their grandchild to the Book Fair if they would like.
Academic Updates
Math
Last week, your students learned about place value through the hundred billions and through the thousandths (decimals). They learned how to read and write big and small numbers and how to write numbers using expanded form (with exponents.) They also began to explore Powers of 10. This week, I will pick up where they left off with Powers of 10, Multiples, and move onto Expressions and Equations.
Language Arts
Science
Social Studies
Students read the first chapter of our Social Studies textbook last week. It covered landscape regions of the United States and early American civilizations. We will take a test on this material this Friday. Please look for a Study Guide to come home on Monday or Tuesday this week so your student can prepare for the test.
Our second States & Capitals test will also be given this Friday, September 22. If your student passed the Southern Border states with 100%, he/she will be taking the test on the Eastern Border states. If your student did not pass the Southern Border states, he/she will need to take that quiz again. Please see my newsletter of 9/5/17 with more information on how students are tested. Your child's homework planner this week should say "Study for States & Capitals" every day. If you or your child are looking for ways to practice, please take a look at the online resources listed on my classroom website.
We will be beginning our 2nd chapter in Social Studies this week. Our focus will be on Native American tribes of the U.S. Your students will be doing an inquiry research project on Native American tribes in various regions of the United States and working with a small group to put together a Google Slides presentation about the tribes in their region and how they survived. This chapter will culminate in a 5th grade Native American Day where students from all 5th grade classes rotate through a variety of activities related to Native American customs and cultures. More information will be sent home, but I will likely need several volunteers for this fun day.
