The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of May 28-May 30!
Message from the principal
As we close out the 2017-18 school, I wanted to thank everyone for a terrific year of learning and growth at UHS! Last Thursday, we celebrated our seniors, the UHS Class of 2018, at their graduation ceremony. UHS teachers welcomed seniors as they entered the Knapp Center, creating a tunnel for them to walk through. Graduation speakers highlighted the seniors terrific year and memories from years past, while inspiring students reach our UHS vision...to go out and change the world!
While we will miss this class and remember a wonderful year with them, we also look ahead for our returning students with resolve to a strong finish with finals the next couple of days and with excitement to the start of the 2018-19 school year! In between now and then, I hope that everyone has a rejuvenating and productive summer!
A few reminders for students and families:
- Return checked out books to the UHS Library Media Center
- Clean out your locker (on the front and the inside)
- Register for 2018-19 school year
- Verify your course requests for 2018-19 on your PowerSchool login.
- Summer physicals (if you are doing sports; info about free health clinics below)
- Meningitis shots (for students who are going to be seniors in 2018-19; details below)
- Plan for ways to be more involved at UHS next year (see clubs and activities below)
- Read, write, speak, learn, explore, over the summer months

Important information for Parents of Juniors - Vaccine Requirement
Last year, the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Immunization, issued a new vaccine rule that requires all students entering or transferring into the 12th grade and born after September 15, 1999, show vaccine documentation of two doses of the meningococcal vaccine, or one dose if the vaccine was received when the student was 16 years of age or older.
Meningococcal disease is a very serious, potentially life threatening, disease. The meningococcal vaccine is 85-100 percent effective at preventing infection from the subtypes of meningococcus found in the vaccine.
Please complete this requirement. If you have received a letter or email from Mrs. Ness, UHS School Nurse, your student has not completed the requirement. By law, if the student is not fully immunized for meningitis, they will not be allowed to attend school, sports, and school-related activities starting day 1 of the 2018 – 2019 school year (August 23, 2018).
Please set up an appointment with your healthcare provider for the meningitis vaccine and turn in the updated vaccine record to Mrs. Ness.
Exciting changes to UHS for fall 2018 - UPDATE!
As we continue to expand and enhance opportunities for access to teachers to support learning, UHS will be rolling out some exciting changes to support students learning. School will still start and end at the same times as it does this year. We will continue to have a modified-block schedule (8 classes on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and 4 block periods on Wednesday and Thursday along with Connections).
However, we are creating time in the school day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, to have guaranteed access for teachers to have with students, provide extensions on standards, and time to study. We are reallocating time from 5th period (currently 11 minutes longer than all other periods in the day) along with using Connections time on those days to create additional time.
Students will largely have choice of where they go during this time, including having intervention for additional learning, extensions of learning standards, and study table to further learning. I.E.S. Time (Intervention, Extension, Study table). There will be no additional homework tied to this time.
We will be expanding our lunchroom seating and reconfigure the flow of how students enter the area to get their food to help with adding additional students to two lunches. Below are pictures of what the daily schedule will be next year.
We will also start off the year with students going to their Connections teacher during this I.E.S time for the first couple of weeks so that students can learn more about the system and how to sign up for their time.
Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays - Non-Block Days
Wednesdays, Thursdays - Block Days

Leaving? Graduating? Here's how to save your Google Suite data
A note from Josh Whitver in the UCSD TechComm office about saving files if a student is leaving UHS at the end of this year:
If you're leaving Urbandale Schools after this year and have created documents or sent/received mail in G Suite that you'd rather not lose, there's a product called "Google Takeout" which will allow you to download a copy of your Gmail, Drive documents, Calendars, Contacts, YouTube videos, etc.
To access it, log in to your UCSD G Suite account and visit this URL:
https://www.google.com/settings/takeout . Select the services whose data you'd like to archive, click the blue “Next" button at the bottom of the screen, choose the archiveformat you’d like (I’d recommend leaving it at .zip), and click “Create Archive."
If you've gotten any questions from students (graduating seniors and any students who will be moving away, especially) on how to save their Google Drive content, please let them know about the Takeout product, which will be the easiest way for them to preserve their data before their UCSD account is deactivated this summer.
