East Middle School
Parent Newsletter: August 16th
A Note From the Principal
Dear East Middle School Students, Parents, and Guardians:
Teachers are back and all is right in the world! We spent our morning in the district convocation and were able to hear from some amazing speakers. Ian Fleming, a Ray-Pec grad, talked to staff and used the analogy of crayons in a crayon box. What a talented guy he is! Then, we heard from Dan Garrison, Teacher of the Year, as he inspired us with his "Be There" theme. He is definitely deserving of the recognition, and we are proud to call him ours in the middle level grades!
We will be very busy over the next few days preparing for your student's return next week, but we just don't want to forget to highlight important things at EMS.
Important Dates:
- Preview Day: 7:35AM-10:10AM on Monday, August 21st. More info in an article below.
- Meet the Teacher Night: 4:00PM-7:00PM on Monday, August 21st. More info in an article below.
- Curriculum Night: Thursday, August 31st; more details to come...
Just a reminder that all students and families are welcome to swing by EMS for Meet the Teacher Night on August 21st from 4PM-7PM. This will be a casual evening for both staff and families, and is in the come-and-go format. In addition, any new-to-the-district 8th grader who is interested in getting to know East Middle School is welcome to join the New 8th Grade Building Tour at 5:30PM during the evening. It will last about 30 minutes. Again, this only for new 8th graders since they do not attend Preview Day.
Our goal is to send you a weekly newsletter of the happenings here at EMS. These newsletters should be hitting your inboxes on either Wednesdays or Thursdays. In addition, the newsletters will also be added to our website in case you want to review a past newsletter. You may even start to see student or staff spotlights appear as a part of sharing our community with you.
Again, we look forward to partnering with you as we embark on this middle school journey together! See you soon.
Sincerely,
Katie Campbell

Fall Sports Practices Have Started!
In addition, student's must have a current physical in order to practice. Students (grades 7-12) planning to participate in athletics for the 2017-2018 school year must have a physical on file dated on or after Feb. 1, 2017: Physical form . This form MUST be on file BEFORE you will be allowed to practice or participate with any Raymore-Peculiar athletic team. If you have any questions please call Mrs. Stacy Johnson at 388-4003.
Eclipse Information From The District
On Aug. 21, 2017, for the first time since 1918, a solar eclipse will be visible on a path across the United States. Our District will be just south of the path of totality for the solar eclipse.
For Raymore and Peculiar, the eclipse will start about 11:41 a.m., with the peak eclipse set to occur at 1:04 p.m., when the moon obscures 99.5 percent of the sun. The eclipse will end at approximately 2:36 p.m.
As always, safety is our top concern. School is not in session on Aug. 21, but some students will have just returned home from Preview Day (see information above.) Please review safety guidelines with your children.
Looking directly at the sun is unsafe. The only safe way to look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as "eclipse glasses". Per NASA, homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun.
Looking for more FREE resources for the once-in-a-lifetime eclipse? The Cass County Health Department purchased solar eclipse glasses for K-12 students and staff in Cass County using Maternal and Child Health grant funding. Supplies are limited.
Most schools in Cass County will receive their glasses on Tuesday for distribution to students.
For Ray-Pec and Sherwood students, the distribution will take place at community locations. The schools will NOT be the distribution point.
I have shared the locations and times on the District Facebook page and via Twitter. If you receive phone calls, you may let people know that Raymore-Peculiar students may pick up solar eclipse glasses from the following locations after noon Tuesday:
Raymore Eyecare (10am-5pm, M-F)
Peculiar Parks and Recreation (8am-5pm, M-F, Peculiar City Hall)
Raymore City Hall (8am-5pm, M-F)

17-18 School Start Times
There are some changes to the school day schedule this year. With grade level reconfiguration, some start and end times have changed slightly to accommodate school scheduling, efficiency in transportation, and staff collaboration.
For middle school students, the school day begins at 7:35 a.m. and ends at 2:50 p.m. Because supervision is not available until 7:10 a.m., students will not be allowed in the building until that time unless they have made prior arrangements with staff members. Students arriving prior to 7:25 a.m. will need to report to their grade level's assigned area. At 7:25 a.m., all students are dismissed from their assigned area or breakfast in the cafeteria and will need to report to their first class of the day by 7:35 a.m.
Car riders will also need to report directly to their first class of the day. Breakfast will be available to students until 7:30 a.m.
***Staff will be practicing these procedures with students on those first few days of school.***
The Most Fun Time of The Year - Shopping for School Supplies!
School supplies do not need to be brought to school on Preview Day! Students are welcome to place items in their lockers during Meet the Teacher Night or on the first official day of school - August 23rd.

Important Immunization Information
All students must present documentation of immunizations, including month, day, and year of each immunization before attending school.
- Incoming 8th graders: Tdap and meningococcal. (The Tdap vaccine helps protect adults and adolescents against 3 diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough.)
The Health Department will accept some insurance, including Medicaid. Uninsured or under-insured children may receive immunizations at half the regular price at this clinic: $10 per child - cash or check only.
