National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist Recipient
EHS’s Anders Liesse a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist Recipient
About 16,000 students have been named as semifinalists in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship program. The high school students will now compete for 7,600 scholarships worth more than $30 million, which will be given out next year.
More than 1.5 million high school juniors in about 21,000 schools across the country entered the 2021 merit program through taking the 2019 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which screened initial applicants, according to the organization.
Semifinalists, whose academic achievements mean they represent less than 1% of American high school students, include the highest-scoring entrants in each state. A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout their time in high school, and must be recommended by a high school official. The student also must write an essay.
Each finalist will compete for a $2,500 scholarship. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored scholarships also will be awarded through the program. About 180 colleges and universities are expected to finance an additional 4,100 college-sponsored scholarships for the finalists.
Anders Liesse, a senior at Evansville High School, was recognized in September as one of 16,000 semi-finalists nation-wide and will be moving forward in the process where winners will be announced in April and July.
Anders is the son of Ellen Embertson and Paul Liesse.
Congratulations Anders!

DEPARTMENT NEWS
AGRICULTURE
Ag Business:
Ag Business students are wrapping their quarter with presenting the businesses they have been creating all quarter as well as learning how to participate in the trading markets!
Vet Science:
Vet Science students have been hard at work putting all their learning into action by performing, physical exams on classroom pets, learning how to properly restrain and bandage various types of animals, the proper steps to filling syringes and administering injections and how to give an animal stitches.
Exploring Agriculture:
Exploring Agriculture students have been learning about pigs and Wisconsin Wildlife during the month of October. Students explored the high school grounds looking at the soil, trees, and wildlife we have right here at EHS. They also learned about how we raise pigs.
FFA:
The Evansville FFA has been very busy the past few weeks with planning our first chapter meeting as well as hosting a National FFA Convention viewing party for members! We are excited to see everyone at our next chapter meeting Nov. 9th at 6 pm. Fruit Sale forms will also be due at the meeting.
ART
The EHS art department is wrapping up the first term with students completing their final projects. Some of the student art created in the first term will be on display in the hallway outside the art department, be sure to check out the art from Mr. Riel and Ms. Rick’s classes. Mr. Riel’s basic digital art and design students have been busy designing sensory art for TRIS students to interact and have fun with. Be sure to check out the sensory art prints in the TRIS library later this fall. Below are a few examples of digital monster illustrations created by Mr. Riel’s illustration students. Students were given a sketch of a monster done by a child and then were asked to use that monster as inspiration to create their own. For many students this was their first attempt at drawing digitally in Photoshop.
Our yearbook is also underway but we need help from the Evansville community. Since our usual after school activities, such as sports and clubs, are not how they used to be, we need your help getting photographs! Please go to the EHS website, click the "About" tab, and then the "Yearbook" tab to find all the yearbook related information. Here you will also find information about the Yearbook Snap app or how to upload your own photos right through our school website. Your photos might just end up in our 2020-2021 yearbook!
BUSINESS
FBLA had their first meeting in October, along with a guest speaker. Jason Rae, the President/CEO of LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, joined us via Zoom. ENGLISH
“Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are” -Mason Cooley
As holiday/seasonal breaks approach and many of us may be spending more time at home than we have in the past, the English department wants to encourage students to KEEP READING! Students can check out books to take home during breaks and/or access books electronically! It is SO important for teens to read things that they enjoy and for them to read consistently! The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project recommends that students should be reading 45 minutes a day! Furthermore, reading and teaching guru Penny Kittle suggests that high school students should “inhale books at a rate of 12–25 a semester.” Breaks are great times to read books that you have been wanting to dive into but don’t have a chance to during busy weeks! Visit the EHS LMC Destiny Discover site to search for and request/check out books or ask a teacher for a recommendation!
FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE
Greetings from the FACS department. The 1st quarter has flown by! I am super proud of my student's ability to be resilient and adapt to our new system. Students in Nutrition and Wellness just finished up a unit on Macro nutrients. Students in Child Development are finishing up the end of the year project where they create a themed unit lesson for 3 & 4 year olds. I am looking forward to three new classes starting 2nd quarter: Medical Terminology, Health Occupations and Interpersonal Relationships.
MATH
The EHS Math Team competed in a virtual Madison Area Math League competition on Wednesday, October 28th at Evansville High School. Three teams from Evansville competed against all of the Madison Area schools and schools from surrounding communities. There were two Varsity teams and a Junior Varsity team with a maximum number of eight students on a team. Each team had its own room with proctors: Corine Schieldt, Betsy Stalder, and DeeJay Redders helping keep time and order. The EHS Varsity 1 Team did amazing by scoring a perfect score on the team event! Congratulations to all participants and we hope to see you again on December 9th for our next virtual meet! Here is a list of those that participated:
Varsity 1: Michael Tran, Anders Liesse, Daniel Ripp, Ari Pincus-Kazmar, Makenzie Halla, Alison Hurda, Kevin Herro, Arrielle Zblewski,

Junior Varsity: Kendra Finfrock, Tucker Peterson, Trista Beyerl, Luke Runde, Paige Heisz, Megan Klinger
MUSIC
A Cappella Choir has been hard at work singing and learning to record using an online recording and composition program called Soundtrap. Students have experimented using the program by themselves and as a choir. We have been recording their voices over an accompaniment track and editing them together in order to create a final product of them singing! This has been challenging and rewarding for students to work on and we look forward to recording more music in the future. Students have also been working on independent music projects and presenting to their classmates about musical time periods, musicals and original compositions. On November 9, both Chamber Choir and Treble Choir will be meeting for the first time this school year and we're looking forward to working together, hitting the ground running with new music!
Students in Symphonic Band have been rehearsing pep music in class for the past few weeks, and even with half-size classes, they are sounding great! We played for a couple of weeks with homemade bell covers until our new masks and bell covers arrived (after an almost two-month wait). We will definitely be ready for public performances if we have the opportunity to play for some basketball games this winter!
Students in Beginning Piano have been practicing, composing, and listening to music! The music department is still in need of keyboards for students to use at home while in our hybrid learning format. If you have one we could borrow for third term (January 25- March 25) please let Mrs. Leahy know at leahya@evansville.k12.wi.us.
Physical Education
Students in PE classes have been playing badminton, designing and completing HIIT workouts and learning about the muscle groups.
SCIENCE
Physical science students have just wrapped up their unit on waves. We have learned basic properties of waves, how light and sound waves travel through solids, liquids, and gases, and have had lots of hands-on learning experiences demonstrating reflection, refraction, diffraction, pitch, frequency, and amplitude. Pictured from Physical Science: Students created 3D holograms, students tuned glass cups to the correct frequency and played music, Braden and Hank built a wave pendulum, and students saw refraction with lasers and jell-o.

We recently analyzed some soil from Lake Leota by breaking it into sand, silt, and clay. Then we used a soil triangle to actually classify the soil after letting it sit overnight to settle.
The EHS Science Olympiad team will be competing in their first meet on Saturday Nov. 14th. Team members will be meeting at EHS for the day and will compete remotely against 20 other schools. We're excited to test all of the amazing things we've been building at this meet. Some of the items that are in the works include: planes, mousetrap vehicles, boomilevers, wifi recievers, and more!
Interested in Science Olympiad? It's not too late to join! The team meets daily during TRIE, and has practice after school each Thursday. Contact Mr. Benson or Ms. Stalder for more information.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Greetings from the EHS Social Studies Department! With the quarter winding down this week, the social studies department has seen a flurry of activity within our course offerings. Students in US History classes conducted a debate on the major business leaders of the early twentieth century, evaluating whether or not those men should be classified as robber barons or captains of industry. Additionally, students have more recently been exploring the varied causes for the start of WWI, and been analyzing the various propaganda techniques used by the US government to support the war effort. Within our freshman Civics classes, students have been incorporating the knowledge they gained from earlier units into writing a persuasive essay on a hypothetical scenario involving student rights at school, which they tend to be very fired up about given the scenario’s details. All in all, the social studies staff is looking for students to finish this quarter with some strong academic performance.
SPANISH
Students in Spanish I and II have been learning how to write and speak about families and family dynamics during the month of October. They learned vocabulary to identify the members of their families and their relationships to one another as well as adjectives they can use to describe all of them. Students in both levels gave presentations to their in-person and virtual classmates about families. In Spanish I, students presented about their own families and the people and pets they consider to be family. In Spanish II, students created celebrity families and used all of the language skills they have developed so far to describe their characteristics and the activities they enjoy. Students in Spanish II have also started to learn more complex verbs during this unit, including how to 'make the bed,' 'take out the garbage,' 'set the table,' and 'mow the lawn.' Just ask them! 🙂
Spanish III students will end the quarter talking about health and healthcare. They will discuss what they and their families do when they are sick and compare that to healthcare in other countries. They will also perform skits in which one of them is the patient and one is the medical professional and roleplay medical situations.
AP Spanish students have been focusing on global challenges. They each chose the issue that they felt was most important, researched it, and presented what they learned to the class. We learned about a variety of social, political, and environmental challenges, and they all did a fantastic job teaching us about their chosen subject.
TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION
The Evansville High School Technology Education addition is now complete. Everything is up and operational. The welding lab has been put to good use, it is being used every day. The Auto shop is always busy. Various vehicles roll in and out on a daily basis. The department has been busy printing various stickers that have been used in all of the buildings to help with social distancing and direction of traffic flow.
