Southview Family Update
March 22, 2024
Principal's Message
Dear Southview Famillies,
It has been great having everyone back in the building after what we hope was a wonderful March Break with friends and family. Although this week has been cold, the longer days and sounds of birds assure us that warmer days are right around the corner. Before we know it we will be trading coats and boots for sunhats and t-shirts!
We are excited to bring back our Family Math Games night this year, on April 4th. This was a very popular event last year, and we hope to see even more families out this time around. More details can be found below; be sure to order your pizza through School Day if you want before April 1, so we have time to place our order. Hope to see you there!
As always, we value our partnership with our families. We know that by working together we can best meet the needs of our students. If you have any questions about your child's education, please reach out to their educators or to the office. Thanks for your support,
Sincerely,
Greg Seiveright (Principal), Jen Cole (VP), and the Southview Team

Family Math Games Night
Family Math Games Night is just around the corner! On April 4 from 5-7 p.m., join us in the gym for an evening of board games. These games are a great way to build a variety of math skills, including number recognition, counting, arithmetic (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing), spatial reasoning, probabilty and more. Even better, games are a great way to spend family time and build social skills like turn taking and gamesmanship. Pizza and drinks are now available for ordering through School Day (Products), so you don't even need to worry about dinner. At the end of the evening all of the games will be sent home with families, so that the fun can continue long after Games Night has ended. Hope to see you on the 4th!
Earth Hour
Earth Hour 2024 is on Saturday, March 23, from 8:30 - 9:30 p.m. This is a time when everyone is encouraged to turn out their lights and reduce electricity use, or do something else for the planet. At school, we turned off non-essential lighting and limited our electricity use from 12-1 p.m. on Friday. Facility Services will provide us with a graph showing how much electricity we saved, and the impact of that one small action. Every little bit helps!
Ramadan
Ramadan Mubarak to those members of our community celebrating Ramadan from March 10 - April 9. This month of fasting and prayer is celebrated by Muslim communities across the world. Please connect with your child's teacher or the office if any special arrangements or accommodations are needed during this month.
Eclipse Info
Our region will experience a total solar eclipse on the afternoon of Monday, April 8. This is a very rare event - the last total eclipse in our region was 700 years ago and there won't be another for 375 years! Queen's University is providing eclipse glasses to every student in Limestone, so they can safely observe this event. Glasses will be sent home closer to the date. We will be talking about the eclipse in some classes, however it is a PA Day, so students will not be in school on the 8th. Families who want resources or information about the eclipse are encouraged to check out the Queen's website dedicated to this event, at: https://www.queensu.ca/physics/2024eclipse
Indigenous Author Visit
On April 11, Southview will host Indigenous author Christy Jordan-Fenton. Christy Jordan-Fenton is the co-author of Fatty Legs, which was named a 2011 USBBY Outstanding International Honor Book. Christy lives in Fort St. John, British Columbia and is Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton's daughter-in-law, an Inuvialuit knowledge keeper and residential school survivor. Together they co-authored several books, including Fatty Legs: A True Story, When I Was Eight and Not My Girl. The books recount the life of Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton who passed away on June 2, 2021.
Christy’s workshops are trauma- informed, decolonizing, strengths-based approaches to exploring residential school history, cultural reclamation, and reclaiming personal narratives as medicine. Our students in grades 4-6 will get to meet Ms. Jordan-Fenton, hear her read from her book, and participate in this wonderful opportunity.
Southview SAC Update
Who We Are: SAC is made up of a group of parent/guardian volunteers who are passionate about supporting our children's learning at Southview. Our Fundraising Team works hard to offer a variety of activities and fundraisers to make an impact in our children's education.
Did you know that every hot lunch you order raises money that SAC uses to support the Southview community? Through our fundraising efforts, we have provided the school with new sports equipment, jerseys, teaching supplies and supported learning in many ways.
- SAC is busy planning for our Spring Carnival. This will also be a free event to Southview families. There will be lots of games and activities, and we have confirmed that Big D's and Kona Ice will be setting up and selling food/drinks. As a bonus, each company has offered a kickback to the school with every purchase! SAVE THE DATE: June 6, 2024
Supporting our school doesn't have to cost money. We are always looking for volunteers to help run our hot lunch program, book fairs and craft sales. If you're interested in getting involved, reach out to the school and find out how you can get started.
Hot Lunch
The final Hot Lunch order window for 2024 is now open! Hot Lunches are available every Friday at first Nutrition Break. You must order through School Day by the order closing date. Once you log into School Day you can select Products, and order for one week at a time or for the whole term at once. We can not accept late orders, as our vendors need our information in time to order their supplies.
Please note that if a child is absent for hot lunch, we can not give refunds, and their order will be distributed to another student through our Food Sharing program. If there happens to be a Snow Day on a Hot Lunch day we will reschedule the Hot Lunch, so students won't miss out but you will have to send them with a lunch!
Dates, menu and costs from April - June are listed below. Please note we have added three Milkshake Mondays - the third one in June may be a treat from School Council for all students!
Our new bike rack has quickly become a scooter rack!
Napanee Writers' Forum Book Fair
Métis Nation of Ontario - Métis Family Wellbeing Program
The Métis Nation of Ontario has expanded and is providing supports in Napanee, at 113 Unit 4A Richmond Blvd, Napanee. The Napanee office now offers the Métis Family Wellbeing Program: this Program is designed to provide a variety of family specific programming to help address the needs of Métis families who are working to heal from violence, have children who are in the care of family services, or have youth who are involved in the justice system.
Through the Program, MFWB Coordinators work to develop individual and family wellness plans which are specific to the unique needs of each person. From there MFWB Coordinators can facilitate access to peer counselling, provide advocacy and referral services, help clients navigate the system, and help to connect them with traditional knowledge and practices. These activities are offered in both one on one and group settings. The activities are designed to help divert children and youth away from high risk behaviours. The Program also offers educational gatherings which are open to the community and provided within culturally safe spaces which are developed and provided by the Program.
Referrals can be made to Coordinator Corrin Harris by phone at 613-328-3958 or by email at corrinh@metisnation.org and will be accepted by agencies or self referrals. Please note that children, parents/caregivers do not need to be Indigenous or hold status or citizenship to receive supports through the Métis Family Wellbeing Program.

Reporting Absences
Reporting Lates: New for the 2023-2024 school year, parents/caregivers are able to report late arrivals using the new Late Arrival option, including the expected arrival time to school. When a student arrives, they are expected to sign in at office and staff make the amendment in our student information system. When a student leaves early, again they are expected to sign out (with parental permission) and again the amendment is made in our system. This method allows us to best track student attendance to ensure safety.
