An upshift of American power and glory put an damper the celebration of the end of war celebration in 1976. President Lyndon Johnson's decision to fund a war and the Society simultaneously, without a big increase in taxation, launched a big double-digit rise and mounting federal debt that hurt the American economy and made living standards bad from the late 1960s into the 1990s.
