Jessie Williams Little "Leading the Way" Award for Outstanding Mentorship
Mentoring is an essential part of the teaching tradition, and mentor teachers offer vital support and guidance to new and future educators. To honor these special teachers for their efforts, Dr. John M. Little has established the Jessie Williams Little “Leading the Way” Award in honor of his wife Winthrop class of ’73. This statewide award is established as a partnership with the Littles, Winthrop University’s Richard W. Riley College of Education and the James and Susan Rex Institute for Educational Renewal and Partnership. The Jessie Williams Little “Leading the Way” Award for Outstanding Teacher Mentorship will recognize a South Carolina educator who has made a significant impact as a mentor to future or beginning teachers.
Gift your Mentor $2,500!
As an annual award, “Leading the Way” will honor the recipient with a cash award (no less than $2,500). The winner will become part of a collaborative group of mentor teacher leaders working to improve education for South Carolina through the Rex Institute. The finalists and the award winner will be recognized at a celebration on Winthrop’s campus in February 2018.
Who is Elligible?
“Leading the Way” is open to public school teachers in South Carolina who are on continuing contract and serve as mentors in one or more of the following ways:
- Formal mentor to beginning or veteran teachers;
- Mentor teacher for pre-service teacher candidates in field experiences and/or student teaching; and/or
- Teacher Cadet instructor.
Nominees must be practicing classroom teachers with at least three years teaching experience.
