ACT Science Subtest Prep
In class this past week, we began a concerted effort to improve our scores on the science section of the ACT. Many students express that the science section is the most difficult for them. This is probably because this section measures the student's ability to reason through science content and data that they have never seen before rather than measuring actual science content knowledge. In order for students to improve their science reasoning ability, they must practice. We will be working on this in class periodically throughout the year. Each time we do, each student will be analyzing their results by recording it on a data table and graph. This will help them in two ways:
1. They will be able to monitor their own progress on the science section overall as well as on each of the three types of passages it contains.
2. This process is a skill that is required on most of the passages on the science section of the ACT. So, the analysis itself will actually help them improve their skills necessary to improve their score.

ACT or SAT?
A lot of people have questions about the difference between the ACT and the SAT. This article may help answer some of those.

ACT Online Practice Questions
There are a lot of options out there for Online ACT practice. While I don't think you should overwhelm your child with the practice, some practice is good. I would suggest the following links.

If you choose to buy ACT prep books, I suggest products from Kaplan and Princeton Review, especially the ones that include an online or computer program component.

THE FIRST 9 WEEKS IS ENDING!
It doesn't seem possible that a fourth of this school year has already passed! The official last day of this 9 weeks is Friday, October 10th. Teachers have to have our grades posted by the evening of Tuesday, October 14th and report cards will go home on Wednesday, October 15th. I have been announcing to my classes for a couple of weeks now that students need to make sure they have everything handed in. I will have everything I have graded and on Infinite Campus by Sunday evening so that students can know what they are still missing and get it handed in. I will have to have everything from them by 3:00 pm on Tuesday in order to get it on by the end of the 9 weeks. I will be putting grades on Infinite Campus each day, so you can keep a check on the progress.
