Q&A
Why did you choose to attend Murray State?
My Mom and Dad are Murray State Alumni. By age 7, I was telling anyone that would listen that I was going to go to Murray State. I have found my second home here. Murray will always have a place in my heart.
Why did you choose your major/minor?
I believe I was born to be a teacher. As for special education, it truly is my passion. I plan to work with disadvantaged children as a moderate to severe disabilities special education teacher. I want to focus on the secondary setting with the goal of preparing students for the transition from school to the real world. I will encourage my students to gain independence, so they can provide for themselves. I want my students to know that they can do anything they set their mind to. I will teach them to be their own biggest advocate, me being their second. I want to give special education students the opportunities they are often told do not exist. Everyone has the potential to change the world and I will be sure that my students have the resources needed.
Tell us about a few of your favorite courses, projects, or mentors.
My favorite courses were ones that placed me in the classroom. These opportunities allowed me to grow as an educator and learn from the best, boosting my confidence along the way. My advisor, Dr. Jamie Mahoney was one of the first people I met on my tour of Murray and she has been my biggest cheerleader throughout the last three years.
Tell us about any accomplishments you've experienced while at MSU, or any clubs/organizations you've enjoyed being a part of.
During my three years at Murray State, I have been a member of Alpha Delta Pi, a student ambassador, a Racer Nation Orientation Leader and an intramural champion. I am the current president of Murray State’s Student Council for Exceptional Children and serve on the student advisory council for the College of Education and Human Services. I also volunteer weekly at Cassidy’s Cause, a horse therapy program for special needs children. I have been blessed with many opportunities to grow while at Murray State and I’m grateful for all of them.
What are your plans for after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to return to my hometown of Liberty, Kentucky, in Casey County, to teach. I plan to work with disadvantaged children as a moderate to severe disabilities special education teacher. I want to focus on the secondary setting with the intent of preparing students for the transition from school to the real world. I want to help students obtain jobs, so they can provide for themselves. I want to help students develop independence in whatever way that is for them. My students will believe that they can do anything they set their mind to. I will teach them to be their own biggest advocate, me being their second biggest advocate. I want to give special education students a chance that they are often told they do not have. Everyone has the potential to change the world and I will be sure that my students have the resources to do just that.
What advice would you give to incoming students at MSU?
I appreciate the experiences and opportunities offered to me while attending Murray State. I would advise all incoming students to be involved. Finding new friends and activities gave me a sense of belonging.
Thank you, Brenna! Keep up the great work!
