April 2024
Spring Break
Just a reminder that school will not be in session on Friday, March 29th for spring break. We will resume our regular school schedule on Tuesday, April 2nd.
A Note From the Nurse
We recently had a dental hygienist come into the school to evaluate all elementary students' teeth. If your child needs to have a follow-up appointment with their dentist, they will receive a note from the nurse in their take home folders. If your child did not receive anything regarding their dental exam, they were instructed to continue brushing their teeth twice a day and continue with follow ups at the dentist every 6 months. Thank you for helping us make sure all students are healthy and ready to learn their best!
Kindergarten Round Up
Kindergarten round up is fast approaching! It will be on Wednesday, April 24th at 5:30. Please see the flyer below for more information.
Math Night
We will have a math night at the elementary on April 24th at 6:00 pm. More information to come home with students after Spring break. This event will be cohosted with Parents As Teachers.
Graham Street Fair - Ring Toss
SKIP will not be taking on the Ring Toss event at the Graham Street Fair this time around. I wanted to let you all know that it's available in case you or someone you know would like to do that this year.
What's Happening in PE?
In April we will start our baseball unit in preparation of the students playing t-ball and baseball this summer. Kindergarten and 1st grade will play T-ball, while 2nd through 6th grade will be playing whiffle ball.
Miss O'Neal is done with her student teaching experience on April 19th. She has done a great job working with our students and we wish her luck as she finishes up junior high track and in her future teaching endeavors.
Spring into the Library!
The elementary celebrated reading during Read Across America week last month. We had book themed dress up days, scavenger hunts, partner reading across grade levels, and the kids’ favorite… finger flashlight reading! Many students who met the reading challenges I gave them got the chance to spin the wheel for some awesome prizes as well. Be sure to check out the NH Library Facebook page to see photos and videos from the week.
Fifteen of our fourth, fifth, and sixth graders got the opportunity to travel to Warrensburg for the Children’s Literature Festival. To earn their ticket to this trip generously paid for by the Marcy Buckles Foundation, they had to read at least ten Mark Twain/Truman past and present nominee books. We got to meet authors Roland Smith, Niki Lenz, Dusti Bowling, and Padma Venkatraman. Other highlights included shopping for books, Chick-fil-A, and Starbucks. :) It was a fun and memorable day! Our last big event of the year for our upper elementary readers is the Library Lock-in scheduled for May 3. To come to this event, fourth-sixth graders must read at least seven of this year’s Mark Twain/Truman nominees.
Last week, almost forty students K-6 came to the Spring Trojan Birthday Book Club. It was a fun night of birthday games, Joey cake (YUM!), and opening presents. Each child got to unwrap the book that I purchased for the library in honor of their birthday (and take home a little present of their own to keep). If this is something you’d like your child to participate in next year, be sure to look for the informational flyer that will come home at the beginning of the year.
Mark your calendars! Everyone’s favorite event of the year, the BOGO Book Fair, is happening April 16-19. This is a great opportunity to stock up on books for summer reading! Prevent that summer slide and READ!
Mrs. Leeper’s Readers
My second and third grade students are enjoying writing informational stories about things that interest them. In it they give detailed descriptions about how it’s done using sequential words, such as, first, next and finally. This is fun for me because I’m learning things about my students I didn’t already know!
There are many students who have made so much progress in their reading skills this year and are continuing to do so. Thank you for reading with your child at home. Just five minutes a night makes a huge difference in their success as a reader!
5th and 6th Grade Band
Both bands are ready for our upcoming performances on April 10th and April 11th. The students have worked very hard to have their music prepared, and we are just “fine tuning” details as our performance date approaches.
The students will be bringing home invitations with the details of when and where we will playing. I would like to ask your help in getting the invitations out to people who may be available to attend our concert in Maitland on Wednesday, April 10th at 10:30 am. You are also welcome to come to our performances in Maryville on April 11th. The times and locations are: 10:00 am at Oak Pointe Assisted Living, 817 South Country Club Road, and 1:15 pm at the Nodaway Nursing Home, 2237 HWY 46.. Our primary focus is senior citizens, but anyone - friends, family, neighbors, etc. is welcome to attend!
Thanks for supporting the band students! Also, a big thank you to SKIP for providing T-shirts for the band! UPCOMING SPRING CONCERT is on May 9th.
What's Happening in Art?
The "I WILL LISTEN" exhibit is FINALLY here!! Thursday March 28th, your child's artwork will be on display at NWMSU from 1-7pm. I encourage you to go to the Union, on campus, and see what an amazing job they did sharing their emotions. There are categories for Elementary (K-4), Middle School (5-8), High School (9-12), College, and adults. You are invited to attend, and vote in each category for your favorite piece in each category. There are prizes for the juried vote, and also the public vote. The prizes are always very exciting. I hope that each of you will go vote for your favorites and show your support for the hard work and learning that went into each piece.
In other Art room news, spring has been on all our minds. We have been creating lots of spring art and working on our painting skills in grades K-2. In grades 3-6 we have been working on a very beautiful mural to hang in the elementary school for years to come. I cannot wait to see the final outcome. Combining all these individual pieces to make one beautiful piece of art is exciting for all of us. It has been fun seeing how invested in this project they are, and how creative each of them has been. My goal is to have the mural done and hung before school begins next fall.
Thank you for sharing your child with us at Nodaway-Holt. As always, I encourage you to hang a piece of your child's art somewhere, to show them how proud you are.
Sing Along in Music!
Kindergarten and first grade have had fun learning to play the rhythm sticks and shakers. Look for them at the concert.
Second and first will have a surprise for you.
Third and fourth grades are continuing to learn their songs for their performance.
Fifth and sixth grades are working hard on their choreography with their hats. If they haven’t told you they need a hat, please ask them about it. The crazier, the better!
