Georgia Preteen Vaccine Reminder
Georgia law requires students to get vaccinated against whooping cough (Tdap) and meningitis (MCV) prior to the beginning of the student's 7th grade year.
- Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is bacterial infection that can easily spread causing severe coughing fits and missed days of school.
- Meningitis is a serious bacterial illness that affects the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis can cause shock, coma, and death within hours of first symptoms.
Before starting the 2021-2022 school year, all students entering or transferring into 11th grade will need proof of a meningococcal booster shot (MCV4), unless their first dose was received on or after their 16th birthday.
Ask your pediatrician or local health department about other shots your child may need including:
- HPV, human papillomavirus 2-shot series for 11 and 12 year old
- Annual flu vaccine
- Any immunization that have not been caught up on
Proof of both vaccines must be documented on the Georgia Immunization Certificate (3231 form). If your child does not have health insurance, call the Forsyth County Health Department and ask about no or low cost vaccines.
