Principal's Report
Happy Holidays!!
While this may seem a little premature, this will be the last newsletter for Term 1. As such, I would like to congratulate everyone on a wonderful first term in 2024. It is hard to believe that at the end of next week we will be at the end of our first term of learning!
Can I especially congratulate our Kindergarten students who, at the end of next week, will have completed their first term of schooling. Beginning school is a tricky time of adjustment, and we are all exceptionally proud of how our youngest students have gone about their first term of primary school.
Across the whole school, it certainly has been a very settled and happy start to the year. It is a credit to our dedicated students and professional teachers, along with our supportive school community that we find ourselves in such a special place. I thank everyone for their support of our school in 2024.
I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday break. The Term 1 holidays are my favourite of the year... the weather is a little cooler, but the days tend to still be warm and perfect for getting out and about. I hope this year is no different!
School resumes for students on Tuesday 30 April 2024. We look forward to seeing everyone return happy, relaxed and ready to learn for what will no doubt be a busy and enjoyable term at Woonona Public School.
School Cross Country
Our School Cross Country Day was not only a huge success, but a lot of fun! Congratulations to Mr Argaet who convened the event and all teachers for supporting the day. A sincere thanks to our parents who came to support our students, and for creating a fantastic atmosphere of support. It certainly was a wonderful day.
Finally, well done to all our students who challenged themselves on our difficult courses. There were some wonderful performances, with many children achieving well beyond what they thought they could achieve! Well done to everyone involved!! Many of our students will now go on to represent our school at District Cross Country on Wednesday 8 May 2024.
Easter Hat Parade And Year 6 Raffle
Our school held our Easter Hat Parade last Thursday, and what an event it was! It was great to see so many students proud to show off their creations to family and friends. It was also great to see our families turn out in huge numbers to support such a memorable event, with some of our staff discussing that it may have been the biggest crowd ever! A big thanks to Mrs Barnaby for coordinating and well done to all our students and teachers for coming up with such fantastic designs for their Easter Hats.
A huge congratulations to Ms Phillips, her team of Stage 3 teachers and the many Year 6 students and families who supported our Year 6 Easter Raffle. Once again, the raffle was a huge success with over $1700 raised towards end of year activities for our Year 6 students. Whilst the outcome was amazing, the reasons for this are clear, a huge group of dedicated people working together to achieve a common goal. Well done and thank you to all who contributed!
State Swimming Carnival
The final two days of Term 1 will coincide with the State Swimming Championships at Homebush in Sydney. I would like to wish all our swimmers the best as they compete against the best swimmers in NSW and in many cases, Australia. It takes great commitment to reach such an outstanding level of competition and I’m sure our whole school community is very proud of what they have achieved and will achieve.
NAPLAN
In Weeks 7, 8 and 9 our Year 3 and Year 5 students completed NAPLAN testing. Congratulations to all students involved for the enthusiasm and positive attitude shown in your approach. We are very proud of your efforts. Results from this test will be made in Term 2, with results provided to families once received by our school.
P&C Meeting – Trialing A New Venue
Our next meeting falls on Wednesday 10 April at 6:30pm at Woonona Bulli RSL. The P&C is trialing a new venue with the idea that this may assist families. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to do so, and of course may bring their children. Having said that, once the meeting begins, we hope that your child/ren will be able to play independently to allow the meeting to proceed. We are hoping that this may provide families with the opportunity to attend and hear more about our school and our dedicated P&C.
Hot Cross Bun Drive
A big thanks to our P&C who once again supported our annual Hot Cross Bun drive. From Liz who coordinated, to the parents who packed and distributed the sales, we thank you for this lovely initiative that not only raises some funds but also gives every purchaser a delicious treat.

SRC Update
The SRC 2024 is off to a great start. The school leaders have been working hard to come up with ideas to improve our school. Every second Thursday our leaders meet and brainstorm ideas for the following SRC meeting. We plan and prepare for the meetings, allocating roles and making sure the meetings are fun and engaging. We’ve been busy writing scripts for our school's social skills videos, which are then filmed and uploaded for everyone to watch.
Our first few whole-school SRC meetings have been productive and fun. In our first meeting, we got to know each other, playing games and forming groups. In our groups, we have been developing ideas that we might be able to achieve. This year we are aiming to build a stronger school community and provide children with fun things to do at lunch time. We are hoping to continue our support of the Bellambi Neighbourhood Centre through food drives.
We are looking forward to seeing what goals we can achieve in 2024.

Moments In Maths
Recently in maths, Stage 2 and 3 have been delving into reasoning and problem solving.
They have been challenged to think about the problem solving strategies they have been using and have been working hard to articulate where they started, what they know and what they wonder to help them solve problems.
Stage 3 have also been solving problems involving length. They have loved participating in hands on activities and experimenting with different units to measure distance, perimeter and area!
WPS Gardening Club
Woonona Public School's Gardening Club is back up and running in 2024!
This term, we have ripped out the old plants and planted new seedlings. Gardening club is on every Thursday at lunch. Students are more than welcome to bring in their own gloves if they wish. We are hoping to get some nice snow peas, beans and sweet potatoes soon!
Library News
It has been a very busy term in the Library with lots of reading happening with the start of the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Most children have recorded 8-10 books already on their reading lists and we even have a few super enthusiastic students who have completed the 20 books for PRC already. Well done to all student for their efforts this term. If students read additional books over the holiday break they can head to the PRC student sight to logon and record their books.
End of term overdue notices for books borrowed will be sent out this week. Can parents please help your children to locate any overdue books and return to the Library as soon as possible. If a book has been lost, parents can pay for a replacement at the office. Book prices are listed on the overdue notice form. Thank you for your cooperation.
Finally, I would like to wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday break and look forward to seeing students back in the Library next term. Remember even though students are on holidays encourage them to continue to read for enjoyment over the holiday break
Happy reading,
Mrs Carroll
Librarian

Congratulations to our State Knockout cricket team who has beaten Balgownie PS in an entertaining first round clash.
Star performances came from Bob, who retired not out for 43, and Oliver, who bowled two of Balgownie’s top order in the first over, including knocking back the middle peg first ball of the innings.
Every student from both schools put in a huge effort and played the game in the right spirit.
