Message from the Principal
Today is the first day of May. But there is rain forecasted for Tuesday and Thursday. So, it will be a good idea for students to pack a light rain jacket.
It's hard to believe we only have six weeks left of school. Although we are in the last stretch, students must continue to attend school every single day. Here is a video message from the district attorney of Santa Clara County about the importance of daily attendance.
Third through fifth grade students will take the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) from Tuesday, May 2nd to May 11th. We need all students to attend school daily and arrive on time during state testing. if students are absent they will take the test when they return to school, in a separate setting.
The end of the school year is filled with exciting learning opportunities. Over the next six weeks, all students will practice for Dancefest and complete projects to display at Open House. Dancefest is a school-wide event where students in each grade level perform a dance together. When students miss school, it may be difficult to get caught up. Therefore, please try to schedule trips or appointments when school is not in session so your child won't miss anything.
Lastly, please note that we can not offer Independent Study during the last week of school.
Let's have a great week! (Go Warriors!)

CAASPP Statewide Testing - 3rd -5th Grade from May 2nd to May 11th
Each spring, third through fifth grade students participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). These tests were created to gauge each student’s performance in English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics. The CAASPP assessments will be one measure that will be used—along with other information—to measure the progress our schools and district are making in educating all our students. Additionally, students in fifth grade take the California Science Test (CAST). Given online, the tests are computer-adaptive, allowing more precise measurement of individual skills.
Carlton's students will be testing from Tuesday, May 2nd to Thursday, May 11th. We appreciate your efforts to ensure your child is in school and arrives on time every day during the testing window.
You are an important part of your child’s education. To make sure your child feels comfortable taking tests, you can:
Explain to your child that these tests are tools to help them learn, and they should not be anxious or scared.
Explore the practice tests with your child at caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html (enter the “student” interface and log in as a guest) so they can become familiar with the platform and setup of the tests.
Remind your child that you and their teacher want them to try their best and are there to help, every step of the way.
Make sure your child gets lots of sleep and eats breakfast during the testing weeks
You will receive your child’s results at or before the beginning of the next school year. The results will identify where your child is doing well or needs more help, so you can better support their learning at home and teachers can better support their learning in the classroom.
To learn more about these tests go to the Starting Smarter web page at ca.startingsmarter.org/, or review the Parent Guides to Understanding at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp
CHSC Multicultural Family Night was Spectacular!
The following is a list of all the cultures and countries that Carlton families and staff members learned about at the event :
Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Brazil, Carlton, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Turkiye, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Udmurtian, and Uzbekistan.
I want to thank Linda Chiu, the Multicultural Family Night lead coordinator, and all the volunteers who worked so hard to prepare the food, activities, and educational materials for each table. What a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our diversity and to help our students become global citizens in the future.
Meet Jennifer Smith, Our Occupational Therapist
We are very fortunate to have Jennifer Smith as our new Occupational Therapist. Jennifer Smith has been a pediatric Occupational Therapist for 24 years, graduating from San Jose State University with a master's degree. She has worked in a variety of settings including outpatient hospitals, private clinics, early intervention, and school systems. Ms. Smith has experience working with young babies all the way up to post-secondary students and loves being an OT.
She is the mother of an 11-year-old, sixth-grade daughter who keeps her busy outside of work. She really enjoys volunteering in her free time and is the leader of her Girl Scout troop that has been together since Kindergarten. If she has time, she enjoys reading a good mystery outside under the warm sunshine with a nice cup of tea.
