Aiming to Keep You Informed
March 8, 2019
From the Office
Today, report cards were mailed home. We encourage you to have a conversation with your child regarding their progress thus far and to set goals with them for the 3rd Trimester. It is important for students to continue to challenge themselves academically and finish the school year at a high level. Please reach out to your child's teacher or Team Leader for any assistance you may need to ensure your child has a successful 3rd Trimester.
Upcoming Student Testing
After Spring Break, students will complete the new Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) testing. IAR is state mandated and replaces the PARCC test. Please read this IAR Parent Letter or visit https://www.isbe.net/iar for more information regarding the Illinois Assessment of Readiness. At Westfield, students will complete testing the week of April 8 - 12th, with make-up testing the following week.
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness will be used to measure the growth of each student as compared to students around the state. We believe that our students should approach this type of testing with confidence and view it as an opportunity to demonstrate how much they have grown this year and how prepared they are to move to the next level.
Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday, March 10th at 2:00am. We lose an hour, but we gain some evening light! Spring is on it's way!!
Have a nice weekend,

A Message to Parents/Guardians from their PE/Health Teacher
Dear Parents/Guardians-
Your child/children will be involved in an outside of school project for their PE class. The project is called “Healthy Food TV Show” where they will make a video that shows how to prepare and make a healthy food dish (ex: fruit smoothie, chicken kabobs, cauliflower pizza, etc). They can do this project individually or with a group of up to 5 students. We told the students that it is highly recommended to have adult supervision when they are preparing/making their food for their safety and the safety of the home. Please have a conversation with your child/children: when they plan on doing this, what they are making and who will be supervising (if needed). This project is due on Friday, April 12th, so they have plenty of time to prepare for this. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s PE teacher.
Sincerely,
Westfield PE Department
PLEASE NOTE: CALENDAR CHANGES
- Monday, April 22nd will be an Institute day (no student attendance)
- Friday, May 24th will be a student attendance day. (previously listed as a teacher work day)
A Note about Student Illness from the Nurse
Dear Parents,
Bloomingdale SD 13 has been experiencing a relatively high number of absences over the past couple of days. The symptoms are not consistent with one specific illness. We ask parents to monitor the health of their students and keep students at home if they appear sick. Here are some general health guidelines to follow:
Students should be kept at home when:
1. He/she has a fever of 100.0℉ or greater ─ your child may return to school after being fever-free for a full 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication.
2. He/she is vomiting or has diarrhea ─ your child may return to school if there is no vomiting or diarrhea for a full 24 hours.
3. He/she has a persistent sore throat or a hacking cough ─ your child may return to school after been seen by a physician for evaluation and has begun any necessary treatment.
4. He/she has generalized body aches, fatigue, and appears pale in color ─ your child may return to school when rested and feeling stronger.
Thank you! Nurse Jones

Innovation Night (formerly Portfolio Night)
During Innovation Night students will share their project with parents, family, and community members. Attendees will be invited in to walk around, listen to student presentations and ask them questions! The tentative date for Innovation Night at Westfield is May 16th! We are looking forward to watching students navigate these problems and ideas while learning critical life-long skills! Innovation Night will replace our traditional "Portfolio Night" from years past. Portfolios will still be curated and students can share them with parents at home.
