Read for the Record!
October 27, 2016
What IS Read for the Record?
Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® is a national campaign launched over a decade ago that helps address educational inequities that leave too many children unprepared for kindergarten. On Thursday, October 27, 2016, children and adults will gather to read, learn, and laugh as they join together for the world’s largest shared reading experience.
Each year, Jumpstart selects one children’s book as the catalyst for Read for the Record. This year’s official campaign book, The Bear Ate Your Sandwich by Julia Sarcone-Roach, will not only inspire adults to read with children but will also spur policymakers and organizations to take action towards transformative change in early education while putting books in the hands of more children across the country.

What do WE do as teachers?
During the week of October 11, students will be introduced to the Read for the Record/Jumpstart Early Literacy Campaign during their Library Resource. Starting that week, and throughout the month of October, we will show our caring by donating spare change towards supporting Jumpstart with their Early Literacy campaign. Jars will be located in the office and the Library.
For you, the teacher, on October 27, you'll need to set aside 5-10 minutes for a read-aloud of the book, The Bear Ate Your Sandwich. There is one copy available in the library, but even easier - an online copy will be available starting October 21 (so you can preview it). Once that is available, a link will be emailed to you, or you can visit Jumpstart's website https://www.jstart.org/campaigns/faqs to access it.
Jumpstart provides activities to go along with the book. There are also additional activities available on Google Drive.
Certificates will be printed for each classroom and placed in your box that day to display after reading!
Questions? Please come ask at the Library! I'll be more than happy to help!
