Wade Harnack, Abby Boroff and Joangely Rodriguez Selected for Financial Award
Congratulations to Wade Harnack, Abby Boroff and Joangely Rodriguez for winning honorable mention in the Financial Literacy Art competition. Each participant whose work was selected for the Art Show also won a financial award.
This contest was established 13 years ago by the Oakland County Treasurer’s Office, in partnership with Flagstar Bank and Oakland Schools, to support financial literacy and the creative arts for Oakland County public high school students. The work was adjudicated on creativity, artistic execution, incorporation of the financial literacy theme, and answers to the supplemental questions. The answers to the questions were very important in the judging process.
Participating students, their families and teachers will attend a reception on Thursday, May 2, hosted by Oakland County Treasurer Robert Wittenberg in the auditorium at the Flagstar Bank Regional Headquarters in Troy. As in past years, ALL participating artists will have the opportunity to talk about their art entries.
All artwork will be printed and the posters will be hung for the reception and then will hang in the Oakland County Treasurer’s Office and in their online gallery for one year. This office is open to the public from 8:30AM-4:30PM at 1200 Telegraph Road, Pontiac.
Congratulations Wade, Abby and Joangely!

WKHS DECA Students Take Top Honors, Move on to Nationals
This past weekend, Kettering’s DECA Chapter competed alongside 4000 DECA members from the state of Michigan at our State Career Development Conference, where they tested and interviewed for the honor of attending the International Career Development Conference this April. As well, Captains' Corner was honored with the gold-level certification. This honor comes from national DECA, so our team of Allana Kimmerer and Ashlyn Campbell will compete at the ICDC. Qualifying for the Ignite, Elevate, Aspire, and Thrive Academies include Ace Miller, Gio Randazzo, Ella Swenson, Carissa Caldwell, and Zoey Miller. The following students competed this weekend:

Kettering Choirs Update
WKHS Junior Earns Division 1 Rating at MSVMA State Solo & Ensemble
Congratulations to Marisa Black, who received a Division 1 rating (Excellent) and a PERFECT SCORE of 120 at last week's MSVMA State Solo & Ensemble for her two solos: 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘈𝘳𝘪𝘢 by Mozart and 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦'𝘴 𝘗𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘺 by Roger Quilter.
Additionally, the judge said her voice was smooth and beautiful as velvet and was of Olympic caliber for a high school vocalist! Well done!
Choirs Earn Top Honors at MSVMA
Congratulations to Miss Laird and all four of our Kettering Choirs for receiving Division I (Excellent) ratings at MSVMA Choral Festival! This is the second year in a row that all of our choirs have received Excellent ratings.
Monday, March 4, the Kettering Choirs performed at their Pre-Festival Concert where they hosted Dr. Amon Eady, Director of Choral Activities at Central Michigan University. After the choirs performed their MSVMA Choral Festival repertoire, Dr. Eady worked with each ensemble to help improve their performances. We are so grateful that our choir program has the opportunity to host such esteemed and sought after professionals in the choir world to our school.
Wish the Kettering Choirs good luck as they travel to Clarkston High School on Thursday, March 21st for MSVMA District Choral Festival.

A note from the principal:
We are excited to continue our 1-to-1 technology initiative this year. This is an opportunity we believe will best position students for success and aligns with our mission.
Each classroom will have at least three charging stations, but to best prepare your student’s Chrome Book for a full day’s use please be sure to charge their device overnight.
We understand parents and students have concerns about device protection. To best support student safety, backpacks and computer bags are not permitted in classrooms. However, we encourage families to consider neoprene device cases with handles.
Our 1-to-1 initiative will also take away the academic need for cell phones and personal electronic devices.
As we begin the year, students will be directed house their phones in the hanging holders in each classroom. This will be a school-wide expectation, for all classrooms. This will allow students to avoid the distraction of push alerts, social media, group texts and other non-academic uses of their device.
Research shows these distractions have a negative impact on academic achievement.
Headphones are also prohibited from classrooms.
Students who use their phones for glucose readers or other medical needs are exempt from this policy. Parents are asked to include this information in their Plan of Care documents.
Students will continue to have the privilege to use their personal devices at lunch, passing time and in the building, during early morning and after-school hours.
All classrooms remain equipped with teacher telephones. In addition, student phones will be only feet away in case of emergencies. You can always reach our main office at 248-673-1261.
Academic Updates, AP Exam Dates, and Tutoring Opportunities
Academic Updates
We are excited to share the following updates with our learning community:
· After school tutoring, under the guidance and instruction of WKHS teachers and staff, begins Monday, February 26, in Room 210.
· Tutoring runs from 2:30 to 4:15 pm, Mondays and Wednesdays.
· To best plan for the needs of our learners, we are asking that students/families sign up for tutoring one day prior to attending. This will allow school officials to plan for transportation and snacks. For Monday sessions, we ask that students sign up by the end of the day the previous Friday. For Wednesday sessions, the deadline is Tuesday.
· Tutoring begins February 26, but transportation will not begin until March 5.
· Those attending tutoring on 2/26 and 2/28 will be responsible for their own transportation home.
· NWEA Testing begins Wednesday, 2/28. This exam will be a grade that counts for 5% of students’ achievement score for their Math and ELA course. This exam can only help a student’s grade. If the student achieves the NWEA goal (RIT) score, this will be an automatic 100% grade. If the student does not meet their NWEA goal score, the mark will be noted, but the score will be exempted from counting negatively against the course grade.
