Parkview Celebrates Countries Around The World
The Parkview Dual Language Immersion program has challenged all Parkview students to learn more about the world around them. At the beginning of the school year, each classroom selected a country to study. In December, each class shared how holidays are celebrated in their country. Through the country study, the children have learned about dress, climate, culture and holidays as well as a list of interesting facts. During the TASTE OF PARKVIEW, each classroom will be sharing their country study and have a display in their classroom. In May, all classrooms will give a final, interactive presentation about their country to all the Parkview students.

Safety First - 5 Tips for Drop Off and Dismissal
Thank You!!! Over the past couple of months, we have been working to make safety adjustments to our morning drop off and afternoon dismissal plans. We greatly appreciate your patience and help making Parkview safe for all students. Here are a few suggestions that will help make the process safe for our children.
- Have your Parkview Pick-up Sign Visible
- Reduce Speed in the Parking Lot
- Avoid Left Turns
- Avoid Parking on Wood Street (as a reminder crossing Wood Street outside of the crosswalk is J Walking and dangerous)
- Students should debark and enter car door nearest the curb
FNL Friday May 18, 2018
Please save the date!!! Friday, May 18th, 2018. Despite school being in session, FNL will still be held.
Please be on the lookout for many communications regarding FNL via your student’s Class Dojo account, our FNL Slack account or papers sent home. Permission slips, parent contact information and our itinerary will be sent home during the upcoming weeks. Your cooperation with returning these to school in a timely manner is greatly appreciated. FNL is a long standing tradition here at Parkview. It has taken many hours and people to get this far, but we are not done yet! We are in need of small group leaders, set up and take down crew, security and station attendees for the night. Many areas of need only require 1 - 2 hours of your time. If you want to get involved in any way, shape, or form, please contact me at agonzalez@valpo.k12.in.us.
Many thanks to those who supported our spring fundraiser for FNL!!!! Thank you for keeping this amazing event going!

Spanish Dual Language Immersion
Here are a few of the benefits of a Dual Language Immersion Program:
- Research suggests that children who have rich and early exposure to two languages are cognitively more advanced than their monolingual peers on certain highly sophisticated cognitive tasks related to attention and abstract reasoning (Petitto, 2002)
- Developing proficiency in two languages is associated positively with greater cognitive flexibility and awareness of language which contributes to academic achievement. (Cummins, 1999)
What is Dual Language?
- Dual language is a type of bilingual education where students are taught in two languages. Dual languages programs foster bilingualism and bi-literacy, so that students are able to speak, read and write in two languages. Dual language programs also foster an increased awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and encourage high levels of achievement through instruction in two languages.
- English native speakers and Spanish native speakers are instructed together.
- There is a clear and consistent separation of languages.
- Knowledge learned through one language paves the way for knowledge acquisition in the second language. (Lindholm-Leary, 2007)
What Can I Expect as my Child Develops a Second Language?
- Pre-production......Non-verbal, draws and points.
- Early pre-production............Limited comprehension 1-2 word sentences
- Speech emergence......Simple sentences, good comprehension with grammar errors
- Intermediate fluency ....................Excellent comprehension, few grammar errors
- Advanced fluency.............Native level of bilingualism in comprehension, speaking reading and writing.
How can I help my Child?
- Encourage your child's interest in the language
- Read with your child every day in their NATIVE Language
- Allow your child to watch YouTube appropriate channels in Spanish (Songs)
- Check out Spanish books from the public library
- Download Spanish learning apps on home ipads
- Encourage but do not force your child to speak n the second language
- contact with other parents raising bilingual children in your community
