What are fossils?
A fossil is the remains of a plant or an animal. They are usually found in rock or stone. Fossils are really important because they tell us a story of what happened before us.
What type of rock are they found in?
Fossils are usually found in sedimentary rock. It is the most common type of rock on Earth. Shale, sandstone, and limestone are types of sedimentary rocks.
How are they formed?
Fossils are formed when an animal or plant dies and is buried in mud or silt. Over time layers form and the plant or animal's color and skin fades away. They form a fossil.
Example of how they are formed
A fish dies and sinks to the bottom of the sea. The dirt piles up over the fish. It will then lose it's skin.
