Counselor's Corner: Anti-Bullying Week
Monday, Nov. 16: What is bullying?
Bullying behavior is hurtful behavior that happens over and over again. The person who does the bullying behavior wants to feel powerful or better than the person he or she has hurt.
Today is about verbal bullying or the hurtful words some say to others. This type of bullying could include: name-calling, yelling, spreading rumors, gossip, or constant teasing. . Someone who does this type of bullying behavior wants to make the target upset, scared or uncomfortable. Mean words do hurt feelings!
If someone is saying hurtful things to you repeatedly, what should you do? First tell the person to stop saying bad things. Say you do not like being called that name – that it hurts you. Then, if it happens again, tell an adult at school about the problem.
Tuesday, Nov. 17: What is not bullying?
Sometimes students are confused about what bullying is. Accidently bumping a person is not bullying. Accidently tripping another person on the playground or in PE is not bullying. Disagreeing with a person is not bullying. Arguments are not bullying – they are disagreements.
It is good practice to avoid touching others and their things at school. Sometimes there are accidents. These are not bullying.
Wednesday, Nov. 18: Role of a bystander
Remember that the bystander is very important in stopping bullying. Don’t stand there if one person is being mean to another person. If you see someone making another person sad or saying bad things, just say stop to the person. We say, “Stop! That’s not right!” If we see someone being excluded, we ask that person to join us. Ask someone sitting alone at lunch or recess if they would like to join you. Everyone is part of Preston Hollow. We want everyone to feel welcome and safe at our school.
We learn best when we feel confident and safe.
Help make everyone feel safe and happy at Preston Hollow.
Thursday, Nov. 19: Apologize
All of us, at one time or another, have made a mistake and hurt someone else’s feelings. We didn’t mean to do it, and we say we are sorry. A person who does bullying behavior hurts others a lot and on purpose.
