Last Saturday, five students from Sevier (eighth graders Johnathan Lai and Fathima Shaikh, seventh grader Conner Hall, and sixth graders William Armentrout and Samuel Barbour) competed against other schools in the surrounding area in the MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competition. The team won 2nd place, and Conner Hall qualified to go to the state competition in March in Nashville. He and Fathima Shaikh both qualified to compete in the Countdown Round. The kids have all worked hard and represented the school well.
John Sevier Language Arts teachers, Nancy Weaver, Norie-Anne Young, and Megan Roop have each been awarded a placement to participate in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Arthur and Rochelle Belfer Conference for Educators.
At the conference, Museum educators and scholars share rationales, strategies, and approaches for teaching about the Holocaust. Participants have the opportunity to tour the Museum’s Permanent Exhibition, as well as the special exhibitions Remember the Children: Daniel's Story and Some Were Neighbors: Collaboration & Complicity in the Holocaust, and to explore the Museum’s full range of resources. Those who complete the conference receive a set of educational materials from the Museum.
In addition to the acceptance of the conference, Weaver, Young and Roop were also awarded scholarships. The Levine Institute for Holocaust Education at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum selected each teacher, on their own merits, to receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend the Arthur and Rochelle Belfer Conference: English/Language Arts, at the USHMM from July 19-21, 2017. This scholarship was provided by The Arthur and Rochelle Belfer Foundation.
- Congratulations to Kelli Ferguson as this week's W.O.W. award recipient. Kelli is an amazing counselor, coach, and person. She goes way above and beyond her job duties. Students know that "Fergie" genuinely loves and cares for them. She is a doer, an achiever, and truly, a world changer. -LeAnn Franklin
- Congratulations to Vicky Stoops--winner of the Sevier SOUPFEST! Vicky's taco soup was awarded as Sevier's SUPER SOUP on Friday! Congratulations Vicky!
