From the Office
Greetings from the Wells Office! Previously an email has been sent out to all families with a link for parents to take the 5 Essential Survey. Thank you to everyone that already completed the 5Essentials Parent Survey. This is a reminder to participate, if you haven't done so already. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. To take the survey, please go to http://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/ . The survey will be open until March 29th.
Thank you!
Look out Google here we come!
All grades have been working on computer science standards. K – 2 focused on coding, using Scratch jr. and 3–4 moved up to code with Scratch programming. We were excited to collaborate with our own, Mrs. Anselmi, (instructional technology coach) to introduce us to code.org, a direct, and at your level coding practice site. The best part is, it’s totally free!
Fourth grade is currently building robot cars, and learning how to code them. We took coding off screen at times with some new coding board games.
Finally, we will finish up this unit by inviting various adults, and other students into our classes, to show them our digital games, stories, and creations we have made.
Ask your child about coding, and watch their face light up!

More than Books!
My name is Mrs. Sevier and I’m the Librarian at Wells. Our library is also a classroom where we learn about many different things including how to locate books. We learn about different genres of literature including: fiction, non-fiction, biographies, fairy tales, fables, and many more! The next time your child brings home a book, ask them to share what they know about the book they selected.
The library is also where we learn about technology. We learn some basics about computers and how they work. We talk about being a good digital citizen, being safe online and how to keep our personal information to ourselves. We also work on some basic keyboarding skills. The district has provided a lot of excellent learning programs in Clever. Ask your child to show you some of the programs we use at school! Some examples are: Learning.com, BrainPop, Flocabulary, Abdo-zoom and many others.
I see each class two times in our 6 day rotation. While I have lots of important information to share, my biggest goal is to help kids LOVE to read. I hope they WANT to read new things and I hope they are excited to get books. Want to help improve your child’s reading skills? Read with them at home as often as you can!
