Carbohydrates
Monomer: Monosaccharides
Examples of Carbohydrates
-Glucose
- Galactose
- Cellulose
- Glycogen
- Lactose
Functional Groups
Functional groups that are always found: Hydroxyl, Carbonyl. Sometimes found: Aldehyde.
Common Functions
Carbohydrates are responsible for the storage and transport of energy.
How is its Function Related to its Structure?
By the process of dehydration synthesis, the carbohydrate releases water and causes condensation to happen. In straight chain monosaccharides, oxygen is bonded between between the two carbon atoms which forms a ring. Because the bonds the carbohydrates make are easily broken, energy can be released effectively and quickly.
