American Indian Heritage Month Activities at Spring Hill
- Visit and view the display case in the commons area. Check out the blankets, shawls, ceramic pieces, and books created by and about American Indians of North Carolina.
- The Native American Student Association (NASA) will have its first meeting on Tuesday, November 14 from 3:45-4:30pm in the Media Center. Students interested in NASA must complete the application distributed in homeroom, on the Google drive at ???, or located in the Front Office. Students can return NASA applications to the front office.
- NASA's annual "Rock Your Mocs" Day will be held on Thursday, November 17. All students are invited to wear their favorite pair of shoes that are or resemble moccasins. Did you know that moccasins are the footwear most often associated with traditional North American footwear? Depending on location and available materials, other types of footwear were also worn, for example- woven sandals, boots, and leggings were attached to shoes. The origins of moccasins undoubtedly originate in climates and conditions that made it necessary for people to make protective footwear. Wearing moccasins or boots would have been essential to keep feet from freezing. In warm weather and mild surroundings, protective footwear would be less important and people could easily go barefoot. The word "moccasin" derives from the Algonquian language Powhatan word "makasin" and from the Proto-Algonquian word “maxkeseni” (shoe). “Moccasin” traditionally referred to a shoe with a puckered u-shaped “vamp” over the instep. The name of the Great Lakes Ojibway tribe means “people of the puckered moccasin”. The southern New England Narragansett word for shoe is “Mocussinass” or “Mockussinchass”. Today the word moccasin, known by a variety of spellings, generally refers to all types of hard and soft soled shoe styles, with and without puckered toes, originating with Native Americans. - Our annual American Indian Heritage Month Assembly will be held in the gym on Thursday, November 17 at 8:30am. We will operate on the morning assembly schedule that day, as noted in your Teacher Handbook. This year's presentation will be Storyteller, Kat Littleturtle and her grandson and dancer, flute player, and drummer, Kaya Littleturtle.
- This year's traditional Thanksgiving lunch in the cafeteria will be served on Thursday, November 17 during all lunches. Our annual "Bring Your Parents to School Day" has been changed (from November 16) to this date to attract more participation. Lunch can be purchased in the cafeteria for $5.00 per plate and the menu will consist of turkey or ham, rolls, dressing, sweet potato souffle, green beans, peaches, cranberry sauce, and tea or juice. To learn more about the menu from the ORIGINAL Thanksgiving fest shared by the Pilgrims and Wampanoag at Plymouth Colony in 1621, check out this article: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/what-was-on-the-menu-at-the-first-thanksgiving-511554/#UyiXhs9EEirghDQy.99
Curriculum Corner
Teacher Topic: “10/2,” or “Chunk and Chew”
Categories: Instructional Strategies, Learning, Student Engagement,Teaching Strategies
The 10/2 or “Chunk and Chew” strategy is highly effective in supporting students’ understanding of important concepts. The purpose of 10/2 is to ensure that students are not inundated with input from the teacher without being given appropriate time to process the information.
Research (Costa, 1981 and Long, Swain & Cummins, 1996) reinforces the importance of allowing at least two minutes of student processing time with every ten minutes of teacher lecture. It is the two minutes that supports comprehensible output, negotiating meaning, and a risk-free environment to try new vocabulary and concepts with someone the student understands — another student. Also connected to brain research is the idea of “chunking” information. People remember more if it is chunked (as with social security and phone numbers).
By focusing in short spurts on important knowledge and understandings, lessons are delivered in small, 10 minute, “chunks.” During this time, students listen and possibly take notes. Then, prompted by a reflective question to focus thinking, students are given 2 minutes to “chew” on the information by verbally sharing with a classmate or writing individually.
