No diggity ... no doubt
On Friday night at The Brickyard, the Hobart Brickies squared off against the Gary West Side Cougars in the IHSAA Sectional 17 semifinals. It's been a few years since we've seen this match-up ... 3 to be exact. Hobart last faced West Side back on September 1st of 2017 and the result was a 49-0 victory for the Brickies. With a spot in the sectional championship at stake, there was no doubt that Coach Osika and his staff would have our boys READY TO SHINE!
West Side received the opening kick off and quickly went 3-and-out against the impenetrable Hobart D-D-D-DEFENSE (aka Beasts of The Brickyard). The Cougar punt on 4th down somehow went backwards and the Brickies opened up their 1st offensive series at the 12 yard line. Senior tailback Tyler Turley took the handoff from senior quarterback Riley Johnston on the 1st play from scrimmage and carried the ball through the West Side would-be tacklers into the endzone for a TOUCHDOWN!! Junior placekicker Miki Djankovich booted the extra point through the uprights and it was 7-0 Hobart!
Another 3-and-out ... followed by what appeared to be a mishandled snap on 4th down ... resulted in a turnover on downs for the Cougars and the Brickies once again had a 1st and 10 inside the West Side 20-yard line. On the the 1st play, Johnston rolled out to the right and found classmate Zach Vode wide open behind the Cougar secondary in the endzone for another Brickie TOUCHDOWN!! After Djankovich was good on the point-after, it was 14-0 Hobart with 8 minutes still remaining in the 1st quarter.
With the Hobart offense making things look easy with 2 touchdowns on 2 plays, the Brickie D-D-D-DEFENSE decided to get in on the action ... and the result was AMAZING! The BEASTS OF THE BRICKYARD caused 6 turnovers and scored 5 TOUCHDOWNS for the game!! That's right folks, the DEFENSE scored 5 TDs ... UNBELIEVABLE!! Junior Josh Tejeda returned 2 INTs for TDs ... senior Cam Smith returned an INT for a TD ... and juniors Justin Sawyer and Jake Simpson each returned a FUMBLE, FUMBLAYA for a TD!
Final score: Hobart 70, West Side 0
On offense, junior tailback Chase Homoky led the Brickies with 12 carries for 82 yards and a score. In total, Hobart ran the ball 19 times for 152 yards and found PAYDIRT 4 times - all in the 1st half. A running clock in the 2nd half enabled everyone to go home a bit early and warm up by the fireplace looking forward to next week!
Speaking of next week ... our boys will be playing for the 'SHIP!! Hobart will host Lowell at The Brickyard in the SECTIONAL FINALS! The Brickies will face the Red Devils for the 2nd consecutive year with a sectional title on the line!
Game time is 7 PM. Don't be late or we'll have to start without you :)
