Druid Hills High School
Community Week at a Glance - October 2
Fall Break - No School October 5 - 9
From Ms. Cunningham
I feel fortunate to have served in numerous capacities during my thirteen years in DCSD. And it has truly been my honor and pleasure to serve as your Principal for over four years. I am proud of the successes and growth we achieved together as a community and I look forward to hearing about even more Red Devil accomplishments in the years to come.
Mr. Arnold and I met with the Druid Hills High staff as well as the Advisory Council and PTSA Board during two meetings this afternoon to share the news and to outline the process for hiring the next Druid Hills High School Principal.
Please know that I will always remain a friend and supporter of the Red Devils and will work with the staff, DCSD, and the new Principal as necessary to facilitate a smooth leadership transition.
Extended School Day - Starts October 2
In order to recapture precious instructional time lost due to Hurricane Irma, the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) will extend its school day by 20 minutes, Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, October 2, 2017, through Monday, October 30, 2017.
DCSD schools and offices will also remain open on Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 7) as the district ensures that students don’t miss out on lessons vital to their academic achievement.
The decision to extend the school day was a collaborative effort across all DCSD divisions. In addition, Dr. Green is empowered to make “scheduling changes to the school day because of inclement weather or other emergency conditions.” A primary goal was not to impact Fall Break or Winter Break for both families and employees who may have commitments based on the approved school year calendar. Also, with the unpredictability of North Georgia weather in the winter, the district does not want to use all its inclement weather days before the onset of that season.
Druid Hills High will extend each period by 5 minutes. Here is the tentative bell schedule:
8:09-9:44 1st
9:50-11:25 2nd
11:31-1:45 3rd
- A Lunch 11:25-11:55
- B Lunch 12:03-12:33
- C Lunch 1:15-1:45
IB Schedule

Governor's Honors Program
The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school students who will be rising juniors and seniors during the program. The program offers instruction that is significantly different from the typical high school classroom and that is designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders.
GHP is held in mid-summer (mid-June to mid-July) as a residential educational experience on a college or university campus. Students attend classes in the mornings and afternoons in specific areas of study, and they participate in a wide variety of social and instructional opportunities every evening. Meals and rooms are provided by the program with the only required and expected costs to the students being travel expenses to and from the interviews, a few basic supplies for classes and dorm rooms, and spending money as desired during the program.
Druid Hills High is fortunate to have students participate in this special program every year, and we want to continue this tradition!
Students must be recommended by a teacher in order to be considered for the Governor's Honors Program. Please contact Ms. Cunningham with any questions.
