Board Highlights - February 20, 2020
POLICY NEWS (see links at bottom of Highlights):
Revised Policy 5404, Family, Medical and Maternity Leave, has been adopted. Please take a few moments to review the changes. Any questions should be directed to Human Resources.
5253P, Maintaining Professional Staff/Student Boundaries has been revised. This is being included for all staff to review. Contact Human Resources if you have any questions in regard to these changes, the policy or procedure.
The Board approved Policy 3424, Opioid Related Overdose Reversal for first reading. It will come back to the Board at the next meeting for second read/adoption. Any questions should be taken to Iva Scott.
Assistant Superintendent Scott also brought Policy 2410, High School Graduation Requirements to the Board for a discussion. There could be some major changes to this policy, removing a lot of the language from the policy and adding this to the procedure (2410P) portion. Policy 2410 generally comes to the Board at least one time per year to incorporate changes made by the legislature.
Matt Taran, Naval Avenue Early Learning Center, received an award from the Kaiser Permanente Thriving Schools and Alliance for a Healthier Generation. He was selected for this Honor Roll for his work in helping to build a sustainable healthy school environment. He has put in many hours before and after the school day 1) teaching staff about the importance of incorporating physical activity into the academic day, 2) providing incentives and challenges, and 3) starting physical activity programs for both staff and students. Matt says that staff have been eager to accept the challenges and data shows that students are involved in at least 30 minutes of more physical activity each week thanks to the strong partnerships and work being done by staff, parents, and students.
A couple great “wow!” presentations to the Board: 1) Kelsey McCreary provided a presentation to the Board on the work being done for Kindergarten Transition. 2) West Hills teacher Val Sandell presented with three students, sharing their work on identifying and helping to resolve the problem of noise pollution or echoes that occur in many of their classrooms and the common areas. They provided a lot of feedback from students and staff that the acoustic panels they’ve built are both effective and add some personalized style to the rooms (see photo above).
Dr. Steedman presented the usual monthly fiscal report. The District budget remains poised to utilize approximately 2.5 million of the District's fund balance through normal operations in the 19-20 school year.
Superintendent Leavell thanked some of the key folks, such as Julie Wasserburger and Jonee Dubos as part of the Citizens for Good Schools, and, of course, the community for passing the 4-year Student Support Levy and 2-year Capital Projects Levy. Along with the planning that has begun for West Sound Technical Skills Center, many other projects will begin this year, including new locker rooms, new stadium lights and resurfacing of the tennis courts and track, all at Bremerton High School, and much needed roofs at Crownhill Elementary School and the Administration Building.
The Board approved an April 2021 student excursion to Puerto Rico for Francey Frampton and Hortensia West to take students on a language and cultural tour.
Written Reports included a summary of Student Attendance for the first semester.

Congratulatons, Matt Taran!
Here is what Kaiser Permanente and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation shared about Matt:
When Matt Taran sees an opportunity, he goes for it. And nowhere has that determination been more apparent than in the systematic yet thoughtful way Matt has pursued every opportunity to support students and staff at his school in becoming more physically active.
Matt initiated efforts to build more movement and physical activity into the school day by recruiting a large school wellness committee to oversee school health improvements. Knowing that classroom physical activity breaks are important contributors to getting recommended daily physical activity, he provided an afterschool workshop for interested teachers to learn about physical activity break resources and why they should be consistently offered across classrooms. To help teachers put their newly gained skills into action, Matt obtained a Kaiser Permanente Action Plan grant to purchase physical activity equipment “break kits” for each classroom.
He started an after school running club, and more recently, kicked off a school-wide physical activity break challenge to promote consistent adoption of physical activity breaks throughout the day. 100% of teachers are participating in the challenge. Matt also recognizes the importance of pairing healthy eating with physical activity. He regularly organizes an on-campus farmers market event and encourages healthy classroom celebrations so that students and their families can eat healthy as they build their physical fitness.
