Panamanians regard their country’s location and narrow geography as its most valuable resource , making it great for rail, road, pipeline, and canal crossings. Other natural resources include arable land, grazing lands, and forests. Forested lands produce large exports of hardwood logs. Panama has manganese and iron-ore deposits. Its the world’s ninth largest reserves of copper ore, and working gold mines. Its rich fish catching in the Pacific (especially for shrimp) is being complemented with shrimp farming in ponds. Panama's economy is based on a well-developed services industry that accounts for nearly 80% of its GDP. Services include the Panama Canal, banking, the Colon Free Trade Zone, insurance, container ports, and flagship registry, medical and health, and other business. The country's industry includes, manufacturing of aircraft spare parts. Also the leading exports for Panama are bananas, shrimp, sugar, coffee. Panama first made an impact on world history in 1513 when Spanish explorer Vasco Nuñez de Balboa crossed the isthmus of Panama. Panama declared its independence from Spain in 1821 and became part of Colombia. The discovery of gold in California in 1848 changed Panama forever. Thousands of people from Europe and the eastern United States travelled through Panama. The isthmus crossing was the fastest route to the gold fields. The type of economy in Panama is a market economy.
