SSC Invitation
Oakland Tech’s SSC is looking for staff members who love data, want to see all students be successful and want to work with parents and students to make a change in our community. Is that YOU? If so, Please throw your name in the hat and we will vote at our next Staff meeting.
The SSC or School Site Council is a group of parents, students, teachers, community members, and school staff that work collaboratively to improve Oakland Tech and help close the achievement and opportunity gaps that exist in our school community. The SSC examines our school’s data and through a series of meetings collectively contributes to the writing of Oakland Tech’s site plan (SPSA). Throughout the year, the SSC monitors the implementation of the SPSA and evaluates the effectiveness of the actions. The SSC is also responsible for the budgeting of Title 1 and Supplemental school funds. The SSC plans for spending with the guidance of the principal for the following year and any current remaining funds.
This year we need 4 teachers to serve on the SSC. The responsibilities include:
attending 1 meeting a month on the 3rd Thursday
Stepping up to a leadership position and take on a role within SSC
Wanting to help plan for students success
Review data and assist with writing the SPSA
Latino Heritage Month
Latino Heritage Month is now just days away. In 2018, the Board of Education declared September 15 through October 15 to be our annual celebration of Latino heritage and culture. This time of year marks the Independence Days for many countries which our Latinx students, families, and staff represent. We choose this time of year to celebrate because of the immense pride this season of independence means to our community.
We encourage you to celebrate and honor our Latinx students, and families during Latino Heritage Month. It is a perfect time to hold special educational events, bring in guest speakers, host pot luck and similar special meals, and have a wide variety of other functions that feature Latinx culture and heritage. The district has multiple events that are already scheduled across the District which are listed in this attached document. Please share with our community if your students will be engaged in learning experiences that celebrate the culture of our Latinx students and families.
Mindfulness
Hi Tech staff!
Mr. Bachicha and Meg, Techniclinic therapist will be offering a space for staff mindfulness Thursdays after school from 3:45ish-4:05ish in room S8. Latecomers welcome, just drift in.
More info below.
How many times is it suggested that we manage our stress and emotions?
How many times is it suggested we get thicker skin?
How many times are we asked to care more?
But how often are we presented with a tool to do so?
Mindfulness is a way of being aware of the mind, body, and emotions so that we can respond to life more productively. This is a type of secular meditation that is supported by empirical evidence.
We will be offering a brief mindfulness practice which any staff are welcome to drop in for. No commitment or preparation needed, and it’s fine if you’re running late – just come in! We’ll do a short intro, then a 10-15 minute mindfulness practice (sometimes sitting silently, sometimes doing a guided practice), and we’ll end with a closing or brief discussion.
Who are "we"?
Errico Bachicha – I teach probability/ statistics and I have practiced "sitting" since 2006. I attended a year-long training with Mindful Schools to bring mindfulness in schools. I occasionally practice with my classes and I had a period to teach mindfulness at my last school. I attribute mindfulness to being able to enjoy my job more every year.
Meg Yardley – I’m a counselor at the TechniClinic here on campus. I’m a licensed clinical social worker and I use mindfulness often in individual and group sessions with youth, as a tool for self-awareness and self-regulation. I co-led a drop-in mindfulness practice for teachers at the last school where I worked and I really enjoyed it.
When: Thursdays from 3:45ish-4:05ish
Where: Room S8 (Mr. Bachicha’s room)
Who: Any Tech staff who want to participate
Note: We are teaching mindfulness as an approach and a tool that everyone can access, not as part of any religious belief system.

Please get in your requests by the end of lunch on Mondays to be included in updates.
