Thought for the Week
Encouraging and engaging discussion, debate and discourse
Should people have the Right to Die?
One of the countries top soaps, Coronation Street, is currently tackling the extremely controversial topic of assisted suicide and the right to die. One of the street's famous characters, Hayley Cropper, is losing her battle against pancreatic cancer and has already made the decision to end her own life rather than allow the cancer to kill her.
Hayley Cropper.
Hayley joined the soap in 1998 and has developed into a much loved character in the show.
The diagnosis was bleak.
Doctors offered Hayley little hope in beating her illness and she began to prepare herself for the end of her life.
Hayley's husband struggles to support her decision.
Roy does not agree with Hayley's idea to end her life but he has decided to put his feelings aside for her sake during the final weeks of her life. It will be Roy who is at Hayley's side during her final moments.
Hayley's departure
Although Hayley and her husband Roy didn't agree over the issue at first; this week millions of viewers will tune in to watch their final emotional scenes. Roy is still struggling to understand Hayley's decisions but it seems he has accepted that it is hers to make.
We are asking our students to consider their personal opinions on this issue and what factors may influence their feelings.
