2021-2022 School Year: Volume 11 - Week of November 8, 2021
Be the Best YOU at Grandview!!!
From the Principal's Desk....'Tis the Season to Reflect and be Thankful
As I walked the halls throughout conferences, I was so thankful for the Grandview Community. It was so wonderful seeing parents, students and teachers coming together to make a team to enhance learning for our students. Thank you for being part of this important process. Thank you for taking time out of your busy week for your child's learning.
Also, we have been spending a lot of time these last two weeks to practice our safety. Safety drills of tornado, lockdown and fire, are all being practiced and conversations were had to ensure our students are safe at Grandview each and every day. Please have these conversations at home. Some students do not take our drills seriously and we need to let the students know that we practice so that we are prepared should an emergency ever happen.
In conversations with the Grandview staff, we are always finding better ways to ensure that we continue to be as safe as we can be. Thank you for all the families that are signing in when they come to Grandview, adhering to not dropping your students off unattended before 8:20 and respecting that we do not let students be signed out after 3:15 unless we were informed of it earlier and we could make plans in advance. We also appreciate families not entering the building, during the school day, and if you need something during the school day, you come to the front of the building. We take safety seriously at Grandview! Thank you for supporting this!!
Enjoy the gratitude this month!!

Gratitude Challenge
- Instead of asking the standard question, "How was your day at school?" Try flipping that question to "What's something you appreciated about school today?"
- What about each family member takes a second to write one thing they are thankful for on the family calendar. You don't have to have an elaborate discussion, but members get warm fuzzy feelings just reading about each others loves.
- Teacher your child to talk to themselves about themselves. Gratitude isn't always an outpouring to someone else. Sometimes, it's expressing thankfulness for who we are.
- Model gratitude for your child by expressing it to them and about them frequently.
- Keep a gratitude jar with your child. A few times a week, write something that you're thankful for on a slip of paper. Fold it up and place it in the jar. Revisit the jar when someone in your family needs a "pick-me-up".
- Teach your child to write thank you notes.
- Establish a gratitude ritual. At bedtime, you might ask your child to name three things your child for .
- When something upsetting happens, help your child look for the positive. Looking for the bright side to disappointment builds resiliance.

Math Tips for Home
A great way to reinforce addition, subtraction, and multiplication skills is to play a math game using playing cards. Check out the math games below and enjoy a card game with your child!
Addition Top-It
Players 2
Materials: Deck of cards, face cards worth ten, Ace worth 1 or 11.
How to Play: Each player turns over two cards and adds them together. The player with the greatest sum wins all the cards. Continue until all the cards are gone. 2 + 10 = 12 5 + 5 = 10 Player 1 wins all four cards. Make the game easier by taking higher digit cards out of the deck. Make the game harder by adding 3 cards.
Subtraction Top-It
Players 2
Materials: Deck of cards, face cards worth ten, Ace worth 1 or 11.
How to Play: Each player turns over two cards and subtracts the smaller digit from the larger digit. The player with the smallest difference wins all the cards. Continue until all the cards are gone. 7 - 2 = 5 9 – 5 = 4 Player 2 wins all four cards. Make the game easier by taking higher digit cards out of the deck. Make the game harder by playing with 2- digit - 1-digit subtraction.
Multiplication Top-It
Players 2
Materials: Deck of cards, face cards worth ten, Ace worth 1 or 11.
How to Play: Each player turns over two cards and multiplies to get a product. The player with the largest product wins all the cards. Continue until all the cards are gone. 4 x 10 = 40 3 x 6 = 18 Player 1 wins all four cards. Make the game easier by taking higher digit cards out of the deck. Make the game harder by playing with 2- digit x 1-digit multiplication.

In the Back of the school:
