October 11th - Black & White FridayMessage from PBIS
Dear Parents,
As we make our way through this school year and your students begin and/or continue bringing home positive referrals and broken pillars the PBIS committee wants to remind you of what each stands for and why your student may have received them. The following are descriptions of both. If you have any questions please contact your student’s teacher(s).
Positive Referrals & Knight Spotlights
Positive Referrals are earned by students when a teacher recognizes a student doing the right thing. (“Do the Right Thing. Do the Knight Thing.”) A student given a Positive Referral has demonstrated one of the six pillars of character: Respect, Caring, Responsibility, Trustworthiness, Citizenship, and Fairness. When a student receives a Positive Referral, he/she comes to the office to turn the Positive Referral in. He/She is given a reward. We make a copy of the slip of paper for the student to take home and share with a parent, and the original is put into a drawing. We draw names for rewards twice a nine weeks.
Knight Spotlights are postcards mailed home in order to recognize students who consistently do the right thing or “go above and beyond.” A teacher fills one out and turns it into the office. An administrator calls the student down, gives him/her a reward, makes a copy to go into the nine weeks drawing, and puts the postcard in the mail to send home.
Broken Pillars
Broken Pillars are given to students when they display minor behaviors, not otherwise worthy of a discipline referral, as a formal reminder that the student needs to change the behavior. The Broken Pillars are entered into PowerSchool and tracked by teachers. Broken Pillars are reset every nine weeks. Once a student has received three Broken Pillars, there will be a phone call home. At four Broken Pillars, a conference will be set up with the student and parent(s). Additionally, the student loses the nine week reward. At five Broken Pillars, a student is referred to the office. An administrator speaks with the student and calls the parent. A consequence is issued. Subsequent Broken Pillars for the nine weeks also result in referrals to the office.

This is why!
Students who miss 10 or more days each school year are more likely to struggle in their school work placing them further behind their classmates. Middle and high school students with great attendance are better prepared academically and are more likely to earn a diploma.
Make sure your child is present and successful in school. Help keep him/her on the track for graduation.
Did you know?
- Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, successful and on track to graduation.
- By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
- By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
- Missing 10 percent, or about 18 days, of the school year can drastically affect a student's academic success.
- Students can be chronically absent even if they only miss a day or two every few weeks.
- Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child graduate from college and keep a job.
What can you do to help?
- Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day, make that the expectation.
- Help your child maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night's sleep.
- Check on your child's attendance to be sure absences are not piling up.
- Don't let your child stay home unless truly sick.
- Stay on top of academic progress and seek help from teachers if necessary.
- Stay on top of your child's social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school, while students without many friends can feel isolated.
- Encourage meaningful afterschool activities, including sports and clubs.
Let's make sure all students are Here. Every Minute. Every Class. Every Day.
