Sunset View Newsletter
Week of March 11th
Message from Jennifer
I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful weekend and are adjusting to the time change! This is a busy time at Sunset View with lots of learning to do as we move through the final grading period of the year. Teachers are organizing work and information for Spring Conferences, which will occur at the end of the month, and making adjustments to classroom curriculum to best suit the needs of our students as they make progress towards grade level standards
Around Sunset View
Calming Strategies
Our students have been learning a variety of Calming Strategies during their Mindfulness Class, and let me tell you, they are able to describe them and use them. We now have posters with the strategies hanging in strategic places around campus for students (and adults) to utilize when needed. Ask your children to describe a strategy to you and show you how it is used!
Nudel Cart in Action
Last year, KidsFirst purchased a Nudel Kart for our school. What is a Nudel Kart? It is a deconstructable, mobile play cart that can transform any space into a creative, loose parts, play space for children. It encourages STEM and 21st Century skills, self regulation and growth mindset, and creative, unstructured play. Our UTK students had the opportunity to to experience this last week during afternoon rotations and had so much fun letting their imaginations run wild!
Buddy Classrooms!
One of the things our 4th graders love to talk about when they give student tours is their Buddy Classrooms! Our older students buddy with our younger students to help with everything from learning to log into their computers, to reading, to helping with art projects. This is an example of Mrs. Alegre's and Mrs. Girard's collaboration.

2023/2024 California School Parent Survey
The purpose of this survey is to obtain parent perceptions about the school.
Your participation is voluntary. It is also very important. The information you provide will help guide district and school efforts to promote safety, enhance learning supports, and improve student achievement.
This is an anonymous survey. It is designed so that no one can be identified from the data. You do not have to respond to any questions that you feel could be used to identify you. Simply skip any such questions.
All questions apply to this school only.
The results are for the use of your district. The California Department of Education and WestEd will preserve data confidentiality and refer any data requests to the district.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACCESSING THE SURVEY
If you have more than one child at this school, you will only need to complete one survey for this school. Please fill out just one survey about the school using your oldest child as a reference.
Access the survey using the following URL:

Enrollment Survey
Believe it or not, we are already thinking ahead to next year! In order to plan our classes for the 2024-2025 school year we need to have some idea of our expected enrollment count for August 2024. Please take the survey, linked below, and let us know if your child will be returning and if your 4th grader will be going to Dana Middle School.
Enrollment for new to Sunset View students will begin in late February. We will provide additional details as we get closer to that date.

Reminders
Parking Reminders
Parking is not easy at Sunset View, but I ask that all parents please adhere to certain parking and safety protocols in order to ensure everyone's safety and ability to get to school.
1. Please do not park in the staff parking lot. Staff members arrive at varying times of day, and rely on their parking spot to be open for a timely arrival. Please do not park in the staff parking lot at any time. Just last week we had several teachers late for meetings, and a teacher's car was sideswiped, due to unauthorized parking.
2. Please do not use the staff parking lot as a turn-around during drop-off or pick-up.
3. Please do not park in or block our neighbors' driveways. Their schedules are not the same as ours and they need access to their driveways to get to and from where they are going.
Thank you for your help with this!
Health Office Needs
Our Health Office is in need of new underwear and gently used pants for boys and girls in the following sizes.
- Sizes 4, 5, 6 for girls (especially underwear)
- Sizes 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 for boys
NO DOGS ALLOWED ON CAMPUS
I have recently seen many dogs on campus during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Thank you to those that have been leaving your dogs outside the school gates. Although we love your pets, they are not allowed on campus. Please do not bring pets past the school gates. Please see the district policy below.
Policy Reminder - Animals on Campus
- Animals are permitted at school only when needed for the instructional program and when
under the strict control of qualified instructors or handlers.
-Animals must be obtained from a reliable source and have written certifications that
they are in good health and are not carriers of dangerous disease-causing organisms.
- Hamsters, white rats, black widow spiders, rattlesnakes, and banded psittacine
(parrot-like) birds are too dangerous to have at school.
-Therapy and Service Dogs are allowed with proper certification.
Pets at school: Domestic pets shall not be allowed in classrooms, on or around campus.
Get Your Volunteer Application In!
Be sure to complete your volunteer application complete with TB verification. Our Office Staff can help you with your application and Nurse Paloma can help with TB. Nurse Paloma is here on Wednesdays.
Attendance
Please do not send your child to school when they are sick. From the District’s Wellness department, please review the Guidelines for Parents on Keeping Ill Students Home.
When your child must be absent for any reason, please call the office at 858-988-2000 by 9:30 a.m. every day of non-attendance, giving the exact reason for the absence. You can also email sunselm@sandi.net.
Any child arriving after 9:00 a.m. must stop in the office and pick up a tardy slip. Let's set good habits early in the school year to arrive on time.
