One final note from JHS PTSA President Kim Barnes
First and foremost, I would like to thank all the parents for everything you have done to get your student(s) to this point. It’s not always an easy job. As a parent of three, I see the differences between my kids and know which ones need a little more “assistance” than the others. I’ve said before, it takes a village.
To the students that are graduating in just a few short days, may you find the path you are looking for. Whether it be college, traveling, military, or straight into the workforce, take with you the lessons you have been taught at Claudia Taylor “Lady Bird” Johnson High School and rise above. Shine as we know you can. YOU ARE JAGUARS. Remember ‘Not to Equal, But to Excel.’
To the PTSA Board, volunteers, school Administration and Staff, I would like to thank each and every one of you for all you have done to make this year a success. Of all the programs and events that were completed this year, Shattered Dreams is by far the most important message we can promote. The weather may have hindered our event, but we still got the message out. Distracted driving is not something to mess with. Please stay off your phones while on the road.
For those of you that have seniors and/or are leaving Johnson, I wish you all the best in your next adventure. To those that will be returning, I look forward to seeing you on campus in just a few short months. Take advantage of the summer, relax, stay safe, and I’ll see you soon.
With fond memories,
Kim Barnes
CT Johnson PTSA President

Of fourteen applicants, Addison Lewis and Sandra Moon were selected to receive $1000 each toward their education this fall at a college or university of their choosing.
The CT Johnson PTSA Scholarship offers financial assistance to two graduating CT Johnson students who are members of the Johnson PTSA and who exhibit exemplary support to the organization through volunteerism in the school and in their community. Both Addison and Sandra have actively supported PTSA programs throughout their high school years. The members of the CT Johnson PTSA community are very proud of their accomplishments and support. Cibolo Green Champions Never Drive Distracted
The Johnson HS PTSA Smart Driving Club wants everyone to know the dangers of distracted driving, even those who are not driving!
Cibolo Green Champion KIN students got to spend part of their after school care May 15 participating in games and activities that focused on teaching students the dangers of being distracted and helping them become familiar with traffic safety signs and laws.
Rubi Garcia is Research Associate with Teens in the Driver Seat. This program is an initiative under the Texas A&M Transportation Institute’s Youth Transportation Safety to save lives and reduce injuries among America’s youth. Robbi Smith is Traffic Safety Specialist with the Texas Department of Transportation. Both worked with students from the JHS PTSA Smart Driving club to educate KIN students about the importance of making safe choices when driving.
“These young students are of course not yet driving, but they are passengers in a vehicle and deserve to be safe in the back seat, they deserve to be safe when they get on the road as we all do. We work with elementary students to start the message of safe driving early with the hope these future drivers never develop the habit of driving distracted. We hope this generation will be part of the change that needs to happen in regard to the culture of distracted driving," said Smart Driving Club parent sponsor Melinda Cox.
We are so grateful to Teens in the Driver Seat and TXDOT for their continued work in helping to make our roads, crosswalks and vehicles safer. Students were given a TXDOT bag and traffic safety goodies to take home and were asked to remind their drivers to never drive distracted.
The JHS PTSA Smart Driving Club is grateful to NEISD KIN Director Lakisha Williams for giving the club, Teens in the Driver Seat and TXDOT the opportunity to get a safe driving message out to a new audience. We are also grateful to the newest advocates for safe driving…our Cibolo Green Champion KIN students!
Message from Jack Morgan, Smart Driving Club President
My name is Jack Morgan. I have been president of the Johnson HS PTSA Smart Driving Club for the past two years. My graduation is fast approaching and I will soon be on my way to the next stage of life, but before I leave I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my time at JHS and my involvement in the Smart Driving Club.
The JHS PTSA Smart Driving Club holds a special place in my heart. This club has allowed me to grow not only as a leader, but also as a community member hoping to usher change. Students eager to keep the roads in their neighborhoods safe have worked for over five years to help remind their campus, community and city the importance of making safe choices behind the wheel. Students in the driving club have worked on campus and out in the community to try and break the culture of distracted driving. We, as high school students, have carried the burden, along with many other organizations, of trying to create behavioral and legislative change in regard to safe driving. We, as new drivers, understand more than most, the importance of never driving distracted or driving drunk , and so we have worked with many different groups to share the importance of our safe driving message.
My fellow club members, as well as myself, have accomplished much though our involvement in the driving club.
We successfully organized multiple Smart Driving events during student lunches, turning the school courtyard into an area where SAPD, TXDOT, and distracted driving simulators could convey the perils of driving dangerously. We filmed PSAs and held meetings with city council in an effort to work with local government officials to keep our friends and family and city safe. We developed and designed billboards and created signs on campus and have been interviewed my local media. We have shared our safe driving message with people throughout the city of San Antonio, even with the youngest elementary members of our community. We walked the halls of the State Capitol knocking on the doors of our legislators with the hope they would support legislation to help make driving distracted against the law statewide. We carried the stories of victims with us to every meeting at the Capitol with the goal of convincing our state legislators that these stories mattered and a change needed to be made. We were honored on the House floor for our efforts in promoting awareness and education in regard to safe driving.
I learned a little more about myself during my time in the JHS PTSA Smart Driving Club. I learned that my voice does matter and that standing up for what you know is important takes courage and commitment but that no matter who you are or what your age, it is worth the time. I realized the power of my voice and I realized it was time adults took responsibility as well to help support our message and to help break the culture of distracted driving. Everyone wears their seatbelts now…I'm waiting for the day when everyone keeps their eyes on the road and not on their phone.
Jack Morgan
