Basic First Aid Information
for children and adults
Children who Appear to be Unconscious
- Check for Responsiveness
- Call 9-1-1
- Open the Airway
- Check for Breathing
- Give 2 Rescue Breaths
- Quickly Scan for Severe Bleeding
Children who are Conscious but Choking
- Give 5 Back Blows
- Give 5 Abdominal Thrusts
- Continue Care
Children who are Unconscious and Choking
- Give Rescue Breaths
- Give Chest Compressions
- Look for and Remove Object if Seen
- Give 2 Rescue Breaths
Adults who Appear to be Unconscious
- Check for Responsiveness
- Call 9-1-1
- Open the Airway
- Check for Breathing
- Quickly Scan for Severe Bleeding
Adults who are Conscious but Choking
- Give 5 Back Blows
- Give 5 Abdominal Thrusts
- Continue Care
Adults who are Unconscious and Choking
- Give Rescue Breaths
- Give 30 Chest Compressions
- Look for and Remove Object if Seen
- Give 2 Rescue Breaths
CPR for Children and Adults who aren't Breathing
- Give 30 Chest Compressions
- Give 2 Rescue breaths
- Do Not Stop CPR until they are okay or someone else takes over
AED for Children and Adults who aren't Breathing
- Turn on AED
- Wipe Bare Chest Dry
- Attach pads
- Plug in Connector (if necessary)
- Stand Clear
- Analyze heart Rhythm
- Deliver Shock
- Perform CPR
Children and Adults who are Having a Seizure
- Call or have Someone Call 9-1-1
- Remove nearby Objects
- Monitor condition after seizure passes
Children and Adults who Appear to be Poisoned
- Call 9-1-1 or Poison Control Hotline (1-800-222-1222)
- Provide Care
Children and Adults who are Suffering Burns
- Remove from Source of Burn
- Cool the Burn
- Cover Loosely with Sterile Dressing
- Call 9-1-1
- Care for Shock
Children and Adults who are Externally Bleeding
- Cover the Wound
- Apply Direct Pressure until Bleeding Stops
- Cover the Dressing with Bandage
- Apply more Pressure and Call 9-1-1
Children and Adults with Head, Neck or Spinal Injuries
- Call 9-1-1 or the Local Emergency Number
- Minimize Movement
- Stabilize Head
Children and Adults who Appear to be Having a Stroke
- Try to Determine the Time when the Stroke Began
- Call 9-1-1
- Provide Care
