May is here!
Woodcrest families,
I love the month of May…for several reasons. I learned to ride a bike in May. Warmer weather eventually stays with us in May. There is Cinco de Mayo on May 5, which is immediately followed by No Diet Day on May 6. Mother’s Day is on May 9. Let’s not forget that the beginning of May is smack dab between spring equinox and summer solstice! SOOO much happening.
Most importantly though, I am excited about May 20. In partnership with the PTO’s Spring Family Get Together, Woodcrest staff invites you all to come into the building for a “¡Celebración del aprendizaje!” In addition to opportunity to come into the building there will be outside games, food trucks, and a book fair. Please mark your calendars for May 20 and look for more information over the next few weeks.
Last week, cast members of the Spring Lake Park High School musical came to Woodcrest to perform part of “Oklahoma!” for our students. It was a hit!!! Families reached out to me to share how excited their children were! The show is good for all ages and a great production to introduce younger children to future opportunities at SLP Schools. The play continues this weekend at the high school.
As we wrap up another week, I want you to know that staff and students are deeply engaged in making the end of the year meaningful and successful. Additionally, staff are looking at the 2022-2023 school year and considering how we may refine and improve our practices. It may not sound as fun as No Diet Day but I can assure you that it will have a positive impact on the school and your children.
Con gratitúd,
John Franke

Come One, Come All, Mileage Club Is BACK!
Students will have the opportunity to run/walk/jog laps during recess on M/W/F to earn toe tokens. Each lap equals a 1/4 mile and for every 5 miles kids earn a different toe token design, up to 25 miles. Volunteers at recess help ensure cards are scanned to calculate their laps, cheer on students, chat with other parents, and hand out prizes. Here is the link to sign up to volunteer.
Prizes:
- For each grade level, the most combined miles ran/# students in class will win an extra recess
- Top runner in each grade level will win lunch with Principal Franke
- Top miles ran by a staff member will win a special prize, too
All family members can join in on the fun by getting out with their student(s). We'll accept any miles done at home. All they need to do is send the following information to PTO once a week: Name, Grade, Teacher, and Amount of miles.
Prairie Garden Relay
Thank you to the parent volunteers who helped Woodcrest students take another step in the 2022 Prairie Garden Relay last week. Second graders transplanted seedlings from 1st grade (who had planted seeds from Kindergartners last month) into individual pots and learned about the garden, the parts of a flower, and the interconnectedness between us and nature. Next month, third and fourth graders will complete our annual relay. Volunteer sign ups will be posted soon! Check our Facebook page for more photos!
Save the date for Dine-to-Donate!
Our last event of the year will be on Tuesday, May 10 at Culver's (10550 Baltimore St NE. in Blaine) from 5-7 p.m. Please show ticket when ordering for PTO to receive a 10% donation from your order.
New or Gently Used Book Drive
Donated books can be dropped off in the Woodcrest Office during school hours. In EFL or have a large donation? Send PTO a Facebook message or email us WCSIPTO@gmail.com to arrange porch pick-up from your home.
Tax-deductible financial donations can also be made to Woodcrest PTO for the purchase of books to be used for Literacy Initiatives. Email WCSIPTO@gmail.com for more information.
Literacy Initiatives
The amount of Literacy Initiatives we can support will depend on the amount of books collected. For example, any amount of books can be used to support kids without book access at home. However, we need about 1500 books to do a successful school-wide summer ready event.
