Start-of-Year Reminders
- At the beginning of the school day, ALL STUDENTS WHO ARE BEING DROPPED OFF WILL ENTER THROUGH THE MAIN ENTRANCE. This is a change from last year -- no longer will kids in grades 3-8 enter through the commons vestibule, as those doors will be locked. Please do not drop your student off before 7:30 am. All students who ride the bus will enter through the doors closest to the bus ramp. All exterior doors lock at 8:00 am, and students will need to enter through the front office after that time.
- The school day starts at 8:05 am. Students arriving after 8:05 must be signed in at the front office. Students are considered tardy between 8:05-9:30; after 9:30, students will be marked as being absent for that school day.
- If your child is going to be absent, please call the Message Line: (715) 356-5206, and press option 1. Students will be marked Unexcused if we do not receive a message from a parent or guardian on the Message Line. Students are allowed 10 parent-discretion absences during the school year; additional absences can only be excused with a doctor's note, or with a pre-approved absence form.
- When parents and guests come to visit the school, they are required to sign in in the front office and receive a visitor's badge. The first time guests sign in, we use a driver's license to enter them into our computer system; after that, parents and guests can use the office's computer kiosk to sign themselves in and print a visitor's badge. We appreciate everyone's help in ensuring that, for the safety and security of our students, everyone in our building who is not a student or staff member is wearing a visitor's badge.
- Lunch money can be handed in at the front office. If you are paying with cash, please put the money in an envelope with your student's name and label it 'Lunch Money.' Parents can also apply for free & reduced lunch through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
All cell phones and electronic devices are prohibited during the school day and must be left at home or in a student’s locker. Students may use office or classroom phones in an emergency. Telephone use for personal reasons will be denied. If parents need to get a message to their child during the school day, please leave a message on the Message Line (715) 356-5206, and press option 1 by 2:30 pm. Messages are distributed to students at 10:45 and 2:30 each day. Messages received after 2:30 pm will be reviewed the following day.
- Dismissal times are at 3:03 (PreK-2nd grade), 3:08 (3rd-5th grade), and 3:13 (6th-8th grade)
- All students who take the bus after school will exit through the doors closest to the bus ramp; those who are picked up will exit through the front office doors.
- Front office hours are Monday-Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm.
For additional policies and procedures, please view our 2018-2019 Student Handbook.

Peer Mentors
Greetings 7th and 8th graders! Have you ever wanted to use some of your time and talent to make a difference in the life of a younger student? Being a part of our Peer Mentor Program is a great way to build leadership in yourself while also helping some of our younger students build important skills necessary for success in school and life.
Here's how it works: You'll be expected to maintain good grades and stay free of discipline referrals in order to remain eligible the program. Fill out your application and return to Mrs. Way's office (Room 134) by September 14. If accepted into the program, you'll meet 15 minutes weekly with your little buddy (sometimes less depending on school events).
We work on projects, games, and reading, but more importantly, you'll be creating a positive relationship that will provide support for this student on his/her developmental journey in the early years here at MJ1 Schools. Plus, it's a great activity to use on future job/scholarship applications.

These should be pictures they are willing to have published for others to see of students participating in football, volleyball, and cross country. We would LOVE to have a variety of pictures for the yearbook, and parents often get the best pictures!
Pictures can be sent to bjohnson@mhlt.org, or you can upload them to our Parent Sports Pictures Google folder. Thank you!

Notes from the Nurse
Hello! A few reminders for the start of the school year:
1. PLEASE make sure your student is up to date on all their immunizations. The state of Wisconsin mandates that students have all their required immunization prior to starting the school year (see table of requirements below). If you are unsure if your student is up to date, please go the Wisconsin Immunization Registry at www.dhs.wisconsin.gov click on the Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR) and go to the public immunization record access. If you are choosing to not have your student receive some of their immunizations, please see me as soon as possible so I can give you a waiver that must be filled out for the school year.
2. If your child is going to be participating in a sport they must have a current sports physical. Sports physicals are good for two years. If you are unsure whether your student needs a physical, please see me at registration or email me at pholtz@mhlt.org .
3. If your child will be taking any medications at school, please make sure you have an updated physicians order. This includes oral medication, inhalers, and EpiPens. Please turn in medication and orders as soon as possible.
Any other questions or concerns please email me at pholtz@mhlt.org or call my office, (715) 356-5206 x2204.

Counseling Corner - Did you know?
Coats for Kids. The local Knights of Columbus organization donates new winter coats to our school. Cold weather is right around the corner. If your child is in need of a winter coat and purchasing would be a hardship for your family, please contact Susan Way (X2134) or Deb Schillinger (X2234).
Open House – We can’t wait to meet you. We will have a table set up to promote our Strengthening Families Program. For families with children age 10 and over, this is a chance to learn ways to ease the transition into Middle School. Parents and kids over age 10 participate together. The program is completely free, provides a free family meal, free childcare for siblings under age 10, and fun programming that includes games. Themes include family communication, handling peer pressure, dealing with stress, and supporting goals and dreams.
Peer Mentors – Remember to pick up an application in the guidance office if you are a 7th or 8th grader interested in this program. Applications are due September 14.
Stick Together – On Sept. 25th, our 4th and 5th graders will participate in Stick Together, sponsored by Project Love and Duct Tape®. Kids will learn what a kindness chain is like, they will imagine what kind of school they want, and they will be offered opportunity to sign a pledge to stick together against bullying in our school using colorful Duct Tape and a super-sized banner.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T For the month of September, MHLT is focusing in on the character trait of Respect, which means treating others the way I want to be treated and being considerate and honoring the feelings, opinions, and property of others. This theme will be woven into classroom lessons and staff will “catch” students in the act of showing respect for others by offering encouragement like “way to show Respect for your classmate when working together today”.
