Smoke Signals: Family Edition
August 21-25
Welcome!
Dear Shackelford Families,
As principal of Shackelford Elementary, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year! I am excited to begin my 2nd year with our learning community. We are all excited to have students back in our classrooms. It is our mission to develop through a cooperative effort with the home and community, well-educated, responsible citizens who can excel in a complex world and we look forward to partnering with you to achieve it. We set high goals, and we work hard to achieve them. But I want to assure you that this work goes well beyond the numbers.
Our staff at Shackelford Elementary is a community of professionals. We all—teachers, administrators, school counselors, support staff and the many others working with us—are collaborating to create a safe, supportive, welcoming learning community where all students are treated fairly and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Families and other community members play a critical role as partners in supporting both your students at home and work in the schools. We look forward to working with you throughout the year to make important decisions that impact both your child as an individual and the school as a whole. As a start to this partnership, we hope you will read with your student every night and take advantage of opportunities to become involved on the campus.
Shackelford Elementary is a wonderful learning community. I feel so privileged to be a part of it. This is a very special place, and my colleagues and I appreciate the trust that you’ve shown in us by sending your children here every day. We will do our best to ensure they have a fulfilling, happy and safe year.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at 972-923-4666 if you have any questions or concerns. I am looking forward to a great school year!
Sincerely,
Theresa Burkhalter, principal
Shackelford Elementary

Dismissal
- Car dismissal lines will be long the first week of school. Once students learn the routine, car dismissal will take an average of 10 minutes. Please be patient with us as we all learn the new routine. Getting students home safely is our top priority!
- Students may walk home from school beginning Wednesday, 8/23. On Monday and Tuesday, students must be picked up by bus, day care, or car.
- Students who walk home must live within walking distance of the school and be approved by the principal.
- Each student has a dismissal card with them as they leave the building. This card is given to the adult or student ambassador who dismisses them. In the car line, student and parent cards are matched prior to placing a student in a car. Additional cards may be ordered from the office.
