Happy Friday!
Happy Friday, everyone! I hope that you are all doing well.
We had another successful week, as we get closer to the end of the first marking period in just two weeks. Our Student Council members have been hard at work planning next week's Spirit Week activities. Our teachers have also been busy this week reviewing student performance on assessments and making plans to be sure that everyone receives what they need.
The week included two personal highlights. First, we were able to welcome some parents back into the building on Thursday morning for a before-school celebration of our October Spartan Students of the Month. I always look forward to this monthly opportunity to celebrate students success and it was great for parents to be a part of this again. Next, today was the big "reveal" of this year school musical. Our production this year will be Disney's Beauty and the Beast Jr. After not having a production in the Winter of 2021, I am super-excited that we are going to be able to provide this experience once again for our students. We hope that everyone was excited with the choice of show and that many students will become involved in the cast and crew!
On Friday, we began our day with a series of school safety drills: severe weather, lockdown, and fire/evacuation. These drills are an important part of making sure that we are prepared in the event of an actual emergency. Members of the Upper Providence Township Police Department were on hand to observe and provide feedback.
Please take a few minutes to review the important information in this week's newsletter. Thank you for all of your support. Have a wonderful weekend!
Core Extension & Student Assessment Data
As you may know, 7th period in our daily schedule is known as Core Extension. This is the period in each student's day where they receive a customized plan of instruction. In addition to serving as a time for students to receive services as outlined in their IEP (Individualized Education Plan) or GIEP (Gifted Individualized Education Plan) most students are scheduled for Academic Workshop during the Core Extension period. Some students work independently during Academic Workshop, while others receive additional support and targeted interventions in areas such as mathematics and language arts. These targeted interventions provide students with the opportunity to work in smaller groups for a set period of time and are based upon ongoing assessment data.
In response to our most recent data points - PSSA and MAP from last Spring, MAP from this Fall, and current classroom performance, we will be making some adjustments to the Core Extension plans for some students effective with the new marking period. While we have yet to receive the parents reports from last year's PSSA administration, all of the data that I just referenced will be available for parents to review in HAC beginning on November 16th.
Spirit Week - 10/25-10/29
Student Council is sponsoring the first Spirit Week of the school year. Spirit Week is being done in coordination with Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is celebrated annually to focus on positive and healthy decision-making and the importance of living a drug-free lifestyle. Students who dress according to the daily theme will earn spirit points for their grade level. The themes are as follows:
Monday - Pajama Day - "Follow your Dreams and Be Drug Free"
Tuesday - Team Jersey Day - "Team Up Against Drugs"
Wednesday - Spartan Gear - "Have the Spirit of an SLMS Spartan - Be Drug Free"
Thursday - PINK-OUT - "Support Breast Cancer Awareness"
Friday - Halloween Costumes or Halloween Colors - "Drugs are Scary - Stay Drug Free"
Students were informed of the guidelines for costumes - They must be able to participate in a regular day of school, no inflatable costumes, no Halloween masks that completely cover the face, and no weapons/look-alike weapons.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
With the onset of cold and flu season, we are seeing an increase in students on the absence list and those coming to school with COVID-like symptoms. Based on the Pennsylvania Department of Health current exclusion criteria, please keep your child home from school and get a COVID test if your child has:
ONE or more of the following:
- New cough, lack of smell or taste (without congestion), shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing,
OR TWO or more of the following:
- Fever (oral greater than 100 or temporal greater than 99.5), sore throat, chills, muscle pain, fatigue, headache, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea.
If your child has these symptoms, please keep them home and get a COVID test. If a student comes to the nurse’s office and meets the above criteria, they will be sent home and will require a COVID test to return to school. Please have a plan on how to pick your child up from school immediately if you receive a call from the school nurse.
Please note, if a student has a pending COVID test, they may not attend school until all results are back and negative. The exception to this is students who are fully vaccinated with a known exposure and who do not have symptoms. They may attend school while fully masked pending the results of their test. Home tests are not acceptable.

CHECK GRADES IN HAC
The 1st marking period ends on Friday, November 5th. I have been encouraging students to review their grades in Home Access Center (HAC) and to address any "Z" grades as soon as possible. If you have not done so recently, I would encourage you to sit with your child for a few minutes and ask them to pull up their grades in HAC. This will be a great opportunity to either celebrate academic success thus far or to make a plan for what needs to happen in the coming days and weeks. We want to be sure that everyone is off to a great academic start for the year.
