The Falcon Pride Parent Newsletter
2024 April Edition
Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. In the decades leading up to the first Earth Day celebration, Americans were consuming vast amounts of leaded gas through massive and inefficient automobiles. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. Until this point, mainstream America remained largely oblivious to environmental concerns and how a polluted environment threatens human health.
However, all of this changed in 1962 when Rachel Carson’s New York Times best-seller “Silent Spring” raised public awareness and concerns for living organisms, the environment and the link to pollution and public health. (Cited in the article published by earthday.org) Today we have definitely learned so much more about how to protect and save our planet from doom and destruction. We have regular recycle day pickups, Electric Vehicles (EV’s), High Efficient (HE) appliances, LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting products/light bulbs. Note: Effective February 1, 2024, plastic bags are-banned in Prince George’s County, and we now bring our own recycled bag or we buy “paper bags” for ten cents at the store. We must save our planet so remember to do your part. Respect the environment and the planet. Go Green! April is also National Poetry Month, National Garden Month, and we also celebrate National Siblings Day. These are all wonderful reasons to celebrate what we have. But most of all these celebrations remind us to appreciate our planet, and to love life. Happy Earth Day!
Educationally yours,
Mrs. Tarversmith

"April Showers Bring May Flowers"…who said that?
Answer: Poet Thomas Tusser
The saying can be traced back to England from the 1500s and poet Thomas Tusser. Back then, he wrote “Sweet April showers do spring May Flowers”. In England, the month of April brings huge weather swings with the jet stream lifting northward at the start of spring. “March”
In March sow thy barley, thy land not too cold,
The drier the better, a hundreth times told.
That tilth harrow'd finely, set seed-time an end,
And praise and pray God a good harvest to send.
"March" by Thomas Tusser is a concise and structured guide to agricultural practices in the month of March. Its straightforward language and rhythmical format demonstrate the author's practical approach to farming and his understanding of seasonal rhythms.
