St. Luke Weekly Memo
April 12, 2021
Leadership Message
Spring is one of my favorite times of the year. This week I noticed our students smiling more as they shed their heavy coats and started to enjoy the wonders of things coming back to life. More time was spent outside enjoying our school grounds and gardens nestled in nature and very little time spent on how unique this spring is.
Again this spring we find ourselves living with the uncertainty of the pandemic as well as the uncertainty of the new Alberta curriculum but we must remind ourselves to have faith and believe.
In the Gospel this Sunday Thomas also had his doubts as he questions Jesus’ return from the dead. This Story of Thomas reminds us that if we believe in Jesus we are blessed. We cannot always know how things will turn out and we will have our doubts, but through faith and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we trust the reality of the Bible. We know that faith is a gift and believing sometimes is not always easy. Easter reminds us God is with us. He gives us peace, peace that comes from knowing that while we may be uncertain, God is certain about each of us.
This peace is what we can hold on to during this time of uncertainty. Know and trust that the staff at St. Luke always has your/our students best interests in our minds and our hearts as we move through these uncertain times together.

EICS & St. Luke Support for Lurana House!
We are excited to announce that St. Luke will be part of Lurana House which is a new initiative of Catholic Social Services. St. Luke to date has raised close to $1000.00 from our Break the Rules Day & Our Hot Cross Buns Fundraiser which will support the vulnerable women and children in Lurana House.
Message from Gerald Sseguya from Catholic Social Services:
Catholic Social Services (CSS) Sign of Hope is excited at this moment of transition as we adopt responsibility for the women and children served by Lurana shelter. Lurana officially joined Catholic Social Services on April 1, 2021.
The Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement entrusted CSS to continue their work and mission because our agency shares a strong alignment of values, a legacy of service to vulnerable women, and a commitment to helping those most in need. We are honoured to continue this beautiful and transformative work, and know that bringing Lurana into the CSS family will enable us to provide a continuum of care to women and children seeking refuge from abusive situations. (You can read more about this work on the following page.)
The support of the staff, students and parents of Elk Island Catholic School Division has sustained us for many years now. As we begin this new phase of our relationship I hope you will invest your creative energies in raising the funds which will keep the doors open at Lurana Shelter.
I also request that you keep the women and children facing abuse in your prayers so that someday they, too, may “choose joy.”
Yours sincerely,
Gerald Sseguya Faith and Community Liaison Catholic Social Services
Information is on our EICS website which includes Lurana Shelter information as well as a video shown to staff on Wednesday.

EICS Message on Alberta Education's Curriculum Release
Alberta Education released the draft K-6 curricula last week and is inviting feedback from all Albertans.
EICS will spend the next several weeks unpacking the new curriculum. We will be engaging our teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders before providing our feedback on the survey.
Our EICS educational consultants will be reviewing the new draft curriculum, and we will be engaging teachers in various grades in the review. We will also be seeking input from Alberta Education on what a possible pilot might entail - release time, professional learning, and resources.
Prior to a recommendation being made regarding piloting, EICS is committed to a comprehensive review. If you would like to give feedback on the curriculum to EICS access the survey here:
EICS Draft Curriculum Parent Survey.
We invite you to also provide your feedback to Alberta Education
Have your say - Share your feedback on the draft K-6 curriculum.
