Progress Reports
Progress reports will be coming home next week. This report gives you an idea of how your child is progressing towards meeting expectations as outlined in the curriculum or as indicated on their Individual Education Plan (if they have one).
As you have conversations with your child about the Progress Report, I encourage you to focus on the learning skills. In particular, a focus on self regulation skills will help them access all the learning skills and enjoy themselves more at school. Self-regulation is the ability to monitor and control our own behaviour, emotions, and thoughts. Stuart Shanker, a professor of philosophy at York University, says "a child's or adult's ability to thrive - to complete tasks, form friendships, learn and even love - depends on their ability to self regulate. A child who has trouble paying attention, or controlling anger and impulses is not weak or lacking self discipline - the child is not self-regulating." Check out the article below for some tips on how to help your child self regulate.
Over the last few years, we have been promoting the development of growth mindsets. If we praise effort and good work habits, rather than ability, students are more apt to develop a growth mindset, and set goals for improvement. Using the report comments as feedback to improve will help children set goals. It's the character that children develop through hard work, perseverance, and responsibility that will help them be most successful now and in the future!
As a staff we are committed to working with you and your children to ensure success. This is a great point in the year to connect with your child's teacher. Please use the return slip on the Progress Report card to indicate whether you would like to arrange a meeting to discuss your child's report. Home-school partnerships are a very important part of your child's education.
Math
November is Indiginous Education Month
Kwey kwey, She:kon, Taanshi, Greetings, (pronounced Kway, kway, Say go, Tawn shee)
This area is home to over 7000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. It is the traditional homeland of the Anishinaabe (pronounced Ah nish nah bay) and the Haudenosaunee (pronounced Ho den oh show nay). It is also home to Métis, Inuit and First Nations peoples from across Canada. We believe that all students need to know about the distinct cultures, traditions, and histories of First Nations, Métis and Inuit and so have designated this month as Indigenous Education Month. Throughout the month we will be sharing announcements and using a variety of resources in classrooms that will teach students about the Indigenous people of this area. A First Nation, Metis, and Inuit Self Identification pamphlet will be coming with the Progress Reports.
Dress for the Weather
Brrr...it's getting colder outside! We have two outdoor recesses each day. Students are expected to dress for the weather.
Lost and Found
Ms. M-K continues to oversee the lost and found. She does check for names and return items to students if their name is on it! We encourage you to label your child's clothing and other items (hats, boots, etc.).
Once we have too much to store, we bring unclaimed clothing to donate to a charity store.
