Bear Necessities
Vol. 1, No. 22
Dear St. Charles Families,
We are now ten months into living through a global pandemic. Add to that, civil unrest throughout our country as our nation transitions to a new president, and we find our children exposed to a mountain of challenging information to digest. Many of our children may not remember a time before needing masks and extra caution every day. For those of us for whom one year is just a blip on our timeline of life, we need to remember that it's a major part of our children's lives. For some of us it's a much smaller blip than others, but you know what I mean.
I remember sharing the excitement of the Presidential Inauguration with my students over the years. The traditions that accompanied this grand event were well respected. This week we will experience the same event, although it will be under the challenges of the pandemic. While some will enjoy it as a national ceremony to mark the commencement of a new four-year term for the president of the United States, others will focus more on the protests and heightened security that surround this week's activities. Sorting out our feelings will be difficult. We pray for the safety and emotional well-being of all.
I watch in awe as parents manage to get through each day and continue to raise happy, loving children. Your efforts are shown in the smiles on your children's faces and in the way they treat each other. I applaud your faith which surely is what gets you through these days. Please continue to draw upon that. Some friends and I recently had a virtual visit and commented about the amazing job that parents are doing these days.
The article below reminds us that as parents it is important to help our children process and discuss events in an age-appropriate manner and to utilize coping skills. Teaching children how to take any anxiety or frustration they may be feeling and turn it into positive change is another way parents can help.
As Mr. Rogers taught us, always look for the helpers in difficult situations. Thank you for being the helpers and for raising the next generation of helpers. We are all truly blessed by your actions.
God Bless,
Cindy Smith
