The 1312 Project
Highlights from IE Africa Center and IE in North America
VOLUME I of IV - April 2021
Welcome to the first edition of The 1312 Project, one in a series of four digital journals highlighting the communities, stories, and collaborative work of IE Africa Center & IE North America.
A Letter from Felicia Appenteng: Chair, IE Africa Center & Managing Director of The IE Fund and Lilian Lopez: Regional Director, IE North America
In 1312, a fleet of more than 200 ships set sail to explore the limits of the Atlantic Ocean. This mission was led by King Abubakari II of Mali, one of the world’s greatest empires, made fabulously rich by its extensive trade networks. In fact, Abubakari’s son, Mansa Musa, is reckoned to be the richest man in history. (Sorry, Jeff Bezos!)
Although Abubakari’s ships sailed and were never seen again, his bold expedition illustrates an age-old vision for adventure and global connections. Now, more than 700 years later, the time has come for us to reveal the breadth of African ambition and innovation across the globe.
The 1312 Project is an ongoing initiative from IE University that celebrates the positive impact of connections between Africa and the rest of the world. Developed jointly by the IE Africa Center and IE’s North American team, it aims to shine a light on the African and Afro-descendant solutions to global challenges in North America, to re-examine our shared history, and to explore our future at this crucial point in time.
In each edition, you will find the stories and solutions that are emblematic of this spirit of discovery, excitement and ambition of that innovative voyage. We hope that you will find them as invigorating as we do and look forward to your comments and ideas.
