Compass Points
Last Week, many of you had the opportunity to engage in a Compass Points activity using our 1st quarter data. This is a great thinking routine for students to help them flesh out an idea and begin to evaluate it. With this shift in collaborative, intentional discussion, It moves the conversation and thinking to Quads C and D right away. Minimal, if any, preparation is required-you just need to know the idea or information you want them to discuss. The compass points for discussion are:
N = Need to Know What else do you need to know or find out about this idea or proposition? What additional information would help you to evaluate things?
S = Stance or Suggestion for Moving Forward What is your current stance or opinion on the idea or proposition? How might you move forward in your evaluation of this idea or proposition?
E = Excited: What excites you about this idea or proposition? What’s the upside?
W = Worrisome: What do you find worrisome about this idea or proposition? What’s the downside?
Can you see how moving through these 4 points of view while discussing the same information would take student thinking and collaboration to a whole new level? Can you see the benefit of using this repeatedly? If the routine stays the same, you will not have to spend time "teaching" the routine, only providing students with the discussion material, data, information, etc. As they become familiar with these points, students will begin to incorporate these perspectives into their thinking throughout the day. It's a win-win!
