Teaching is Like Predicting the Weather
I have come to understand that many factors can impact the accuracy of these predictions: a change in wind speed or direction, added moisture, and yes, the skill or experience of the meteorologist. More recently, I have even seen the entertainment value of media take precedence over the value of accuracy.
Do you see where I'm going here? Educating students in a way that leads to their success is much like predicting the weather. We can utilize the best strategies and most recent resources, be extremely skilled and experienced, yet still end up with results that don't match our predictions. Also like meteorologists who miss the mark with a big storm, when our students' success doesn't match our predicted growth, we are in the hot seat with the public.
Sometimes, a last minute change in wind speed, or a factor completely out of our control, interferes with the work we've done with students and the end result isn't what we expect. In those situations, I hope that each of us will stand proud and sleep well knowing that we did everything within our power to provide opportunities for student success...and if that doesn't work, find your favorite Will Ferrell movie and bunker down! Happy Friday!
