At Haskin, we are "Learning Today, Shaping Tomorrow!"
Welcome back to the school year 2017/2018
What a wonderful beginning of the year we have had! If you are new to Haskin, we are thrilled to have you join us. If you are returning, welcome back! "Learning is our Super Power" is our 2017-2018 school theme at Haskin. The children have already begun to settle into the "school" routine. It was great to see so many smiling faces at the "Stop and Drop". The teachers are enthusiastic about the year and are looking forward to working with the students. The energy and atmosphere in the building is very positive and we are all ready for learning!
Report an Absence
To report an absence, parents or guardians are to call the school at 815-786-8812 before 8:30 a.m. on the day of the absence. Voice mail will answer calls before 7:00 a.m. and after 3:30 p.m. If a phone call is not received, a reasonable attempt will be made to contact a parents or guardian. If contact cannot be made, the absence will be considered UNEXCUSED. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
Please be reminded that school is in session from 8:10 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. Students who arrive late to school are considered tardy and need to sign in at the office. Please make sure your child(ren) arrive before the tardy bell rings.
Student Dismissal
Change in Usual Transportation
Please notify the Haskin office of any change in your child’s normal dismissal routine. Notice should be given to the office no later than 2:00 p.m. so that we can notify our staff and ensure your child’s safe dismissal. Along with a change in transportation information, please include your child’s full name, the name of your child’s teacher, the date, and your signature. We prefer that a written notice be placed in student backpacks so that the office receives notification of the change early in the day. If a change occurs after your child is already in school, please call the school office prior to 2:00 p.m. If the office does not have notice of a change in transportation, we will send the student in their usual manner.
Student (Parent) Pick-up
Please arrive on time each day to pick up your child. It is helpful to have an emergency backup plan in case something happens at the last minute that causes you to be unable to be here on time.
All students must depart from school grounds following dismissal, unless they are involved in a supervised after school program or activity.
Signing Students Out During the School Day
In the event that your son/daughter needs to leave school before the end of the day, please send a note and plan to come into the office to sign him/her out. Your child will be called to the office when you arrive, and you may sign him/her out there. Please be prepared to present identification.
Dismissal Pick-up Procedures
Important Reminders from the Haskin Student Handbook
Visitor/Volunteer Cell Phone Use
If you anticipate your visit to be more than a few minutes, please turn your cell phone to vibrate or off to limit distractions to the learning environment. We ask that you do NOT use your cell phone in the building except by the front office. The use of a cell phone in a school zone is against the law. Please refrain from using a cell phone while in a school zone or on school property while in a moving vehicle.
Animals on School Property
In order to assure student health and safety, animals are not allowed on school property, except in the case of a service animal accompanying a student or other individual with a documented disability. This rule may be temporarily waived by the building principal in the case of an educational opportunity to students, provided that (a) the animal is appropriately housed, humanely cared for, and properly handled, and b) students will not be exposed to a dangerous animal or an unhealthy environment.
Treats in School
Often students bring treats to school to share on special occasions. While bringing in snacks does not pose a problem, food allergies and health concerns require that food brought in must be store bought and unopened with clearly labeled ingredients. Non-food items such as pencils, stickers, bookmarks, or other small items are also encourage in lieu of edible treats.
Safety provisions will be set up for food or environmental allergies on an individual basis. Curricular activities involving food will be dealt with individually.

Notes from the Nurse's Office
Head Lice is a Nuisance!!
This information is being distributed as a precautionary measure to curtail and/or control any head lice outbreak in our district. Since cases of head lice are always a possibility when dealing with school children, we are recommending that all parents check their child's head regularly once a week.
The following signs may indicate the presence of lice in your child:
- Persistent itching of the head or the back of the neck
- Scratch marks on the scalp
- Nits attached to the hair - grayish white eggs visible to the naked eye difficult to remove from hair shaft unlike dandruff or hair spray flakes.
Lice are easily transmitted by close physical contact. They can also be transmitted by sharing head coverings, combs and brushes from an infected person. If you child has lice, please contact the school nurse. Immediate treatment of all cases is the best way to contain an outbreak. Your child(ren) will be rechecked before returning to class.
THERE IS NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF...EXCEPT NOT TREATING IT PROPERLY AND PROMPTLY!
Thank you for your cooperation and continued support in this matter.
Vision and Hearing Screenings
Each school year vision/hearing screenings are conducted for Sandwich District 430 schools in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Illinois Department of Public Health. Vision screenings will be done as mandated for the following children: Preschool, Kindergarten, 2nd, 8th, special education students, new/transfer students, and students with any other concerns. Screenings at Haskin will be as follow:
SCREEN
October 12, 2017
RESCREEN
October 25, 2017
Vision screening is not a substitute for complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to undergo this vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report form indicating that an examination has been administered within the previous 12 months and that an evaluation is on file at the school. This notice is not a permission to test and is not required to be returned. Vision screening is not an option. If a vision exam report is not on file at your child's school (in the mandated age/grade) they will be screened. You may contact the school nurse with any questions you might have.

Medication Reminder
Any student requiring medication during the school day needs to have a completed school medication form on file in the office. This includes all prescription, over the counter, inhalers, and emergency/rescue type medications. Forms can be found on the district website or you may contact the School Nurse.
Attention Students With Asthma – New Illinois Law (Public Act 99-0843) requests students with a diagnosis of asthma provide an Asthma Action Plan for School. Please ask your Doctor to provide a copy to the school.
Illness
Please remember the Sandwich District policy in regards to fever, as stated in our handbook on page 6, “Fever: Students sent home from school with a fever of 100 degrees or higher may return to school when they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medicine.”
If a student is sent home by school personnel due to a fever, he or she will not be penalized with an unexcused or excused absence (will not be counted as one of the seven parent excused absences) the following day in order to remain home fever free for 24 hours.

Reading News
Good-Fit Books for Great Reading!
Mrs. Keown and Mrs. Sartori have been helping Haskin readers to select good-fit books. Students know that in order to become great readers they need to practice reading, just like they practice sports. And just like with sports, they must use the right equipment. They need books with decodable words and text they can understand. To find this, they must try books on, just like they try on running shoes. And finding the right book, is like finding the right weight. To build muscle, we work out with weights that are just right - not too heavy and not too light. To build reading power, we read books that are just right -not too easy and not too hard. Here is to a year of good-fit books and great reading!
P.E. News
Welcome back to P.E.! We are super excited for another of learning how to take care of our body to be healthy. Looking forward to a great year!
In Physical Education class, we will continue to need your support with extra-curricular activities. Some of the activities that we will need volunteers for include: Jump Rope for Heart Celebration, Bowling Alley Field Trip, and Field Day. All of your help is appreciated.
Lastly, please help your child keep extra gym shoes in their lockers in case they forget their main P.E. shoes at home. The extra shoes can be any pair of shoes that they can use for emergency. Proper shoes include: athletic shoes, running shoes, and/or training shoes. Shoes that are not allowed in P.E. include: sandals, boots, and any other non-athletic shoes.
Check out our P.E website at adeotifitness.weebly.com for information about P.E. classes.
We have a had a great start to Pre-K! The children are really doing a great job learning our classroom routines. We are especially enjoying the new piece of playground equipment!
During the first week of school Pre-K has been learning their daily routines, exploring literacy and print through books, and learning to identify their name!
The first week of kindergarten has been BUSY! The children have been busy practicing how to share, take turns, and be patient. They have also been gluing, writing, coloring, and listening. On Friday, August 25 we had a popcorn celebration to end our week of learning. Pictured are several students from Mrs. Schmitt’s class playing with their new friends.
First grade students have been learning how to choose the "Right Fit" books. We went "shopping" for books to fill our book baggies. Students will use these book baggies during our Daily 5 reading instruction each day.
Good-Fit Books in Second Grade
With the help of Mrs. Keown and Mrs. Sartori, the second graders have been finding Good-Fit books to read individually. The teachers explained to the second graders that a Good-fit book has to fit a reader just like a shoe needs to fit a runner or walker. Using this example, second graders were able to “try on” and pick books that fit their own reading level. Haskin second grade is off to a great start
Eyebombing!
Third graders in Mrs. Dougherty’s class “eyebombed” the room in preparation for a creative writing project.
