How do you get it? what causes it?
You can get streptococcus through airborne droplets when someone with the infection coughs or sneezes, or through shared food or drinks. streptococcus is caused by many different strands of bacteria.
Symptoms
- Sudden sore throat
- Swollen tonsils
- Pain of difficulty swallowing
- Swollen lymph nodes
- White or yellow spots on the back of the tonsils of the back of the throat
- Bright red or dark red spots on the top of the mouth
Treatments
Antiboitics are used to cure strep throat like amoxicillin, cephalexin, or penicillin.
How deadly is the disease? What is the survival rate?
If the bacteria spreads and causes a serious infection it can be fatal.
Is this disease currently a problem across the world? If so where is it most prevalent?
Strep Throat is more common in the northern area of the United States, however it is also seen in other countries because its a worldwide problem.
Fun facts about the disease.
-It is most common for ages between 5-15 but adults can get it as well.
-not a viral infection
-It is not common for someone who has strep throat to have a sore throat for more than 7 days.
-Symptoms can include bad breath, fever, headache and nausea
-Children with strep throat can return to school the day after if they had been on antibiotics for at least 24 hrs
-600 million cases of strep occur annually
