Trident Pānui
Term 1- Week 10
Principal's Message
Kia ora koutou,
I hope that everyone has had an awesome Easter break with whānau and friends. The end of the term is fast approaching. We have had many amazing curricular and extracurricular things happen this term. Thank you to all our staff and to the support of whānau for providing these opportunities to our young people.
I was fortunate enough to attend the National Jazz Youth Competition last week, where the Trident team gained Bronze. Thank you and congratulations to Alex Kim, Jaime-Lee Coffey and other staff involved. To our students involved, congratulations and well done.
We farewelled the Girls Football Team yesterday who are touring the UK for the next few weeks. We know they will represent Trident High School well.
With one week to go in the term, now is a good time to check in with your young person. Engagement reports will be out next week also. Please contact the appropriate whānau teacher or dean if you require any assistance.
Ngā mihi,
Mikaere October

TE MARUMARU
Last week, we had our official opening and naming ceremony for our new Turf and Canopy. The name of this new space is Te Marumaru, meaning to be shaded and sheltered. This space has already proven popular with students, rain or shine, and will provide an all-weather space for use within our community. We feel very lucky to have such a great facility here at Trident that will enhance our students' school experience.
Thank you to our Whakapiki students and teachers, Matua Te Manaakitanga and Matua Mike, for leading our karakia. After the karakia, a Year 10 PE class and our Special Education students played a friendly game, joined by our Principal Matua Mikaere and Assistant Principal Mr. Stanhope.
This could not have happened without our funders, so a massive thank you goes to the Lotteries Community Facilities Fund, Trust Horizon, Whakatane Mill Limited, and Whakatāne-Ōhope Community Board. A special thank you to our invited guests for their support on the day.
A big shout out again to Toni Harvey for all the work she put into the space!
Tongariro Crossing
Last Wednesday, we took 29 senior students to National Park to walk the Tongariro Crossing. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate, but we made the best of it! Instead of the full 19.6k tramp, we decided to explore two shorter walks that added up to 14km. It may not have been what we planned, but it was still a memorable experience for everyone involved!
We had an awesome group of students with such a positive attitude throughout the trip. They really made the most of the situation and had a blast! We finished off Thursday with rock climbing and a refreshing swim in the hot springs in Turangi.
Big thank you Mr. Florence, Mrs. Reynolds, and Mrs. Marjoribanks for taking this trip!
