William Clark
- William Clark was born in Caroline County, Virginia, on Aug. 1, 1770.
- In 1813 Clark became governor of the Missouri Territory.
- Clark was 33 when a letter from Lewis invited him to share the leadership of the expedition.
Meriwether Lewis
- Lewis was born on Aug. 18, 1774, on a plantation near Charlottesville, Va. Thomas Jefferson , a neighbor, was a friend of the family.
- Lewis became Thomas Jeffersons private secretary. They often discussed the exploration of a land route to the Pacific Ocean.
- In 1809 he started on a trip to Washington, D.C. On October 11 he was found shot to death at an inn near what is now Hohenwald, Tenn.
Sacagawea
- On Feb. 11, 1805, she gave birth to a son, Jean Baptiste.
- she retrieved important papers, instruments, medicine, and other valuables that otherwise would have been lost.
- born in 1788, near the Continental Divide at the present-day Idaho-Montana border U.S., died December 20, 1812.
- Sacagawea has been memorialized with statues, monuments, stamps, and place-names. In 2000 her likeness appeared on a gold-tinted dollar.
